Hotplates and pressure cookers.

Anyone here use hotplates for their pc? I'm looking for something for a 16qt or two that I can put on a timer after some trial and error, set and forget. All American or something cheaper?
Also anyone use a sterilizer? I'd like to know the pros and cons of them vs a pc.

Your PC full of jars will crush just about any hotplate.
The sterilizers actually hold a seal, where the pressure cookers/canners don't. The sterilizer is silent, the PC makes noise. The sterilizer also comes with a little spring that hangs from the lid that is supposed to help disperse heat.
Personally, I'd just get the biggest AA you can afford then slap the sterilizer valve on it. You'll save a few hundred bucks and have a silent PC.

I like the electric sterilizers because of the mechanical timers. Also why I was wondering about hotplates which could easily be put on a timer as well.

The only hotplate I ever tried was excruciatingly slow.

Meh, I hate to go waste money that would be better spent elsewhere if it doesn't work out so well.

I bought a $40ish hotplate on amazon and I use it for my Presto. I forget how big it is but I think it's the biggest one Presto makes. Takes a bit for It to warm up but after it does it is not all that slow. One main complaint is that once it gets to 15 and I adjust it down the cycle for it to keep that temp is a bit long so It'll drop 1 or 2 Psi before it kicks on and starts to go to 15 psi again.

MONSTER HOTPLATE.
This thing handles a fully stacked 40 quart All American. Gets it up to 15 psi in about 15 minutes. The temperature adjustment is very sensitive so you can really dial it in for a slow and steady rock on your valve.

I don't see why the cheap one wouldn't work as it looks the same as the coils on my electric stove and I'm sure I could always replace the element if it got super hot and softened/warped.

I watched a cheap model hot plate melt under the weight and and heat of a 30 quart All American.
I'd be careful putting a filled 30 quart on an oven range of any kind. Not all ovens are made the same, and some just can't handle the weight/heat.
I know for a fact many of the cheaper hot plates can't even get 30 quart PCs up to 15 psi or even 10 psi, and even if they can achieve it they will over heat and shut off in the middle of your run if they have a safety mechanism(hopefully they do).

Other than the sterilizer being quiet as compared to the canner, any other differences?

You'd be able to get away with a cheaper hotplate then.

Those timers don't shut off the heat. They simply make noise. You still have to get up to turn it off. No set it and go to bed type shit.
The cool thing about the electric ones, IMO, is that it doesn't take up a spot on your stove. So if you're PCing 5 batches that day you can still cook dinner. The thermostat is also very accurate. Once you figure out where to set it, you can mark it and use that setting over and over with precision.
IME the main advantage for us using the sterilizer over the PC is the noise. The actual sterilizer can also handle 20 PSI safely, which can cut down a little on your sterilization time.

Well considering my hot water heater in my new place is currently set at 6355477 degrees, I would at least have a head start with a plate.
I'll probably go that route first before dropping 600-800 an an AA.
Wonder if they sell them in store anywhere and really what the differences are in cheaper ones vs more expensive ones?

I have had pour luck with a couple different hot plates. I found that most don't get hot enough to boil water. If it wont boil water it wont hold 15psi in a cooker. I bit the bullet and got a propane burner that was used for frying turkeys. The only drawback to this is soot. I would get about 20 runs on a rank of gas. Hope this helps.

I'd rather not put my cheaper prestos on a burner though I own 2 outdoor ones.
Most of the plates I see are 1000 watt and I have a hard time believing they wouldn't reach 15psi. I really don't wanna buy one and have no use for it though.
