Cheapest pressure cooker that will hold at least 4 1-quart jars?
    #20275763 - 07/15/14 08:17 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Could anyone give me suggestions on the cheapest pressure cooker with a psi gauge that will hold at least 4 1-quart jars?  (preferably under $50)

I've read countless pressure cooker topics here and I understand that all american is the way to go, but I just can't afford that right now.  If my oyster mushroom experiment works out well and I'm able to make some money selling them I'll likely invest it in a good pressure cooker, but until that time a cheapo should get me by.

Thanks!

I bought an electric PC so i am not sure which is the cheapest stove top model.  Just remember you get what you pay for.  A pressure cooker is a potentially dangerous piece of equipment.  If there's anything you should not skimp on, it's probably a pressure cooker.

Just my .02$

Well I definitely don't want to risk having an explosion and killing or maiming myself just to pasteurize grain lol.  Is pressure cooker malfunction common?

Leaving aside cost, what would be the minimum size of pressure cooker that would hold 4 1-quart jars?  I know a 4 quart cooker wouldn't do it since the number relates to volume.  Would a 6 quart do it?  9 quart?  I just need to know what size I need to be shopping for.  I figure if I get one that holds 4 1-quart jars I can do 3 batches of them in a day to get 12 pasteurized jars.

Also are electrics more expensive than stove-top and do they also let you set pressure to 15 psi?

You'll want bigger than a 6 quart for 4 PINT jars.  My 6 quart holds 4 1/2 regular mouth.  The full pint wide mouth jars are too tall to fit.
Hope that helps

edit: i've only heard of PC's failing because they were cheap knock offs or bought at a thrift store.  The rubber gasket can get worn, or the locking lid can fail, or the pressure release valve can fail.  Modern PC's have redundent safety features built in

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.  I guess I'll have to spend more than I wanted to.  The best I've found so far is a "presto 23 quart pressure canner and cooker" for $79.  I suppose, looking on the bright side, I'll be able to do 14 1-quart jars in two runs with it, so it'll save me time.

I bought an 8qt at Walmart for $30. Worked just fine. Held 3qt jars.

I have a 16 quart presto that holds 7 quart jars. It cost $70, which I know is $20 out of your range, but it was worth every penny.

Definitely not a bad idea.  The only reason i went with an electric PC is because i have a gas stove and multiple dogs in the house and i am a forgetful stoner when it comes to cooking anything.  I ALWAYS burn shit. lol.  Stove top models just seemed to risky for me and my gas stove and the electric means even if i get stoned and pass the f*ck out, my house won't be on fire when i wake up.
DSP

However it is small and i believe the pressure is only between 12-15psi.  I can't remember off the top of my head right away.

I've used a pair of these extensively and agree.  No complaints.

I say to save up till you can at least get the one PF posted about. These things don't really hold much value, so when you decide to upgrade later you'll likely just have to give it away or repurpose it for food.

All Americans, while expensive as shit, don't usually fail, and hold resale value.
