How do you define 'actual scientist'?

I would imagine ones who actually are properly given that title, and therefore have the required degree's to go along with it.

The title 'scientist' doesn't have a very tight definition, as far as I'm aware. Anyone can put 'scientist' on his business card. Many companies employ people they call 'chief scientist' or whatever, while these people don't necessarily engage in any kind of actual scientific research. This is one reason why I ask. Secondly, some people consider researchers working in the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, etc) as scientists only, while others would include researchers in e.g. social science as well. Hence my question.

I agree with the latter part of your statement.I was just curious because I usually have more questions than answers that are relevent to science.

Scientist - one engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge. Or, to add constraint, one who uses the scientific method.

So, anyone using honest critical thinking, especially with the proper allocation of the abundance of information now so readily available, can fall into this categorization - SCIENTIST!

A real problem though is this dogmatic reverence of SCIENCE! in throwaway popular culture especially with all these SCIENCE! "popularizers" i.e.: Carl Sagan, Bill Nye, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Michio Idiot Kaku, et al. I think the antidote is to be more specific. Who is the actual SCIENTIST!, the one who shouts SCIENCE! or the one who follows a disciplined process through to it's limited range of possible determinations. The latter is less romantic and less and less popular in the era of social media stupidity. People want the ANSWERS and TRUTH that only SCIENCE! can PROMISE. It's all a lot of dogma and bullshit presented as SCIENCE!.
