    #2027495 - 10/21/03 02:31 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

About 10 of my friends fully collonized bfr cake jars are completly covered in a lightly colored orarnge tint to it. Should he throw them out? And if he should throw them out, is there something he can dunk them in or spray on them to get rid of the mold that is on itt if thats what it realy is?

Are you sure it's orange or just yellowish ? If it is indeed contamination, then there's nothing you can do but toss them.

What species (not strain... cubensis, cyan, azure, etc) is your friend growing?

Then what maia said... some species have an orange tint to the mycelium, which is why I asked. Cubensis should be white.

Actually, don't assume it's contaminated. I believe that most people have different interpretations of what color or significance something really is. On my colonizing golden teacher jars, i too noticed this real faint, lightish orangey/pink color, but I don't believe its a contam. You are probably seeing the same thing I am, because as I understand it, contams are usually pretty obvious, and if they aren't, they should be within a day or two. So my thinking is that its not a contam at all, but since people here don't have a picture, and can't look at it, that they are imagining it as something than it really is.

I think the color comes from mycelium having established itself in certain areas, so it kind of settlesa down, and loses a little of its white brilliance. good luck

Don't assume this ideas as obvious as they are not. The first idea is more probable than the second but sometimes things don't happen that way.
You are correct on the issue about describing the discoloration, sometimes the whole thing gets to subjective about which color the mycelium is changing to, so the process has to go under a trial and error experience, means, inspecting the contaminated area after birth and depending on the decision, trying to fruit the cake or toss it inside the trash bin.
