I had an idea. Would it be possible to prepare birdseed and put it in a foodsaver bag, then P.C. that. Then, since a big P.C. is expensive, you could boil your jars empty with a regular lid and then pour the sterilized, cooled grain into the sterilized jars and put a filter patch in the lid after doing a grain to grain transfer inside a sterilized transfer chamber. It makes sense, but it seems like you would open yourself up for contams, but $245 for a big pressure cooker is alot of dough.

pressure cooker are cheap, you can get an 18 qt pressure cooker/canner for 69.99, the name is PRESTO, it comes in a big yellow box, you should be aboe to find them online for around 80 dollars there not the best one, but the sure as hell work a long ass time when taken care of.

Dude PC the grains in the jars you want to colonize because grains contam easily

You know, the foodsaver bags are not that different from the "Myco" bags just without the filter patch.
If one was to grow any serious amount of mycelium then bags are the way to go.
I agree with the posts above about PC'ing. You need to do that.
There is no other way with grains of all types.
Aspergillius (sp.)(the green stuff) is so strong that even with an industrial PC I still get contaminates.
So until you get a real Pressure cooker, (don't get a presto) stick with the jars and BRF/ vermiculite.
Not to rain on your parade, there was a very good post on easy mycelium expantion. It involved inoculating 1 jar until fully collonized then making 4 jars the same size PC'ing them and carefully dumping them into a big foodsaver bag .
result is 4 times the mycelium.

what brand of pc would you recommend ivan? I'm plannin on getting one this week and don't want shit....I'm looking for the best I can get within reason

dunno why hes bagin on prestos, sure every 10 years they'l need a new rbber seal, and are like half the cost of any real good pressure cooker, like all american, pressure cooker is a pressure cooker as long as you read the manual you should be fine. if you wanna drop like 170 on a 23qt all american, go right ahead some people dont have that much for one like that.

Presto's are fine, but Mirro's are the same price, have a pressure gauge, and run much more quietly than the prestos.  I prefer mirro over presto myself, I'd probably pay about $20 more for the Mirro even though they are typically within a few dollars of each other.

That being said, once I used an AA sterilizer (not pc) I would never use anything else :wink:
