So did I just murder my cakes???
    #2026937 - 10/20/03 10:57 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

So I come home from class today, to discover that I accidently left on the lamp I use to heat up my closet.  I usually just turn it on for an hour here an there, maybe a few hours if i'm home, but I usually turn it off before I leave anywhere. But this morning, I decided that I was going to just put it on for like half an hour before I had to go, and I decided that for that half hour, I was going to put this lamp on the top shelf of my closet, where my jars are incubating, in a couple rubbermaids.  Well, guess who forgot to turn off his lamp? (hint: it was me). So I was like "shit!" I turned it off, and checked my thermometer, and it was running a temperature of 102.9 F.  So naturally I begin to worry that my weeks of colonization have just been ruined by my silly mistake.  Now I read in some FAQ, that the thermal death temp for spawn run was recorded at 106 F.  So a few questions:

1) If many of the jars were 100% colonized, are they still fine to dunk/roll?

2) if a few of the jars still got a few small spots, will they be able to continue colonizing?

3) Am I the only moron to accidently do this?

i used to cover my incubator with an electric blanket, because i didnt think it was getting warm enough. Needless to say, all 20 of my first jars didnt make it

1) try them, remember to cold shock while dunking.

2) they maybe ok...i had some jars suffer about 50% mycelium death due to a heaterpad fuckup, they recolonised the dead areas, but took ages to do so.

3)no.we all make fuck ups....just learn from it....build a 'magash' incubator.

You should be fine; just don't do it again.

If using a heating pad, make sure the bulb of the thermometer is directly on the source of heat.

I guess they are fine. You don't lose anything trying to fruit them. Give it a try. I'm pretty sure they will fruit and the other ones will continue to colonize.

After having so much heat for so long, I figured more of the blank spots would have been covered, but oh well. If they never finish, I still got about 10-15 jars that are good to dunk/shock/roll/birth. I really should look into an incubator, cuz this lamp business isn't very consistant.

Actually, that's not right. Cubensis mycellium colonization speed will peak at 86F . Above and below this mark, speed will be slower.

At 103F, there's almost no growth. At 106F, it's dead.

So?

The person asked if they killed their cakes; at 103 they didn't. It's not good, but is by no means murder.

Give it a few days and see what happens. If they stay nice and white you are good to go. If not redo and don't make the same mistake
