Monotubs are pretty damn "set and forget". If you can't handle the time it takes to do this hobby, maybe you're not cut out for it. Mushrooms just don't appear out of thin air, they take some hard work on your part.

Is grain to grain really that simple? Move colonized grain to sterile uncolonized grain?

Eaglesgift I am fine with what I have been doing. In fact I could keep doing what I'm doing and be fine I was merely asking for a few suggestions from people who might have had similar time restraints or might have gone for an elaborate setup to find out it was useless, which is what this thread has been. Furthermore I have LOVED putting blood sweat and tears into this hobby and for you to post suggesting that I'm not cut out for it is kinda shitty.
Thanks for the suggestions guys much appreciated. G2g will be a fun side project while I get some spawn for my monos

Sorry for shitting in your cookie jar. If you're cut out for it than nobody can take that away from you, not that I was trying to anyways.
Monotubs really are the way to go as far as minimal maintenance goes.
No hard feelings, wasn't my intention.

Thanks that means a lot. I still feel like the little shroom that could, looking up to some big prints here at the shroomery. I never thought I'd even try but it has turned out well. A few bumps but now that I've started I really have had a lot of fun trying new things and starting other projects. It means a lot to me that you say no one can take that away, no hard feelings taken whatsoever.

Just FYI Brown Rice Flour is going to have the most nutrients out of any grain. So if you are using cakes I suggest sticking with BRF instead of milling your own Rye Flour or something of that nature. If you are going with grains, Rye and Millet work really well as medium because of how much water the grains can hold and other factors I am not sure of.

How contaminant prone is brf then? Would it be smart to try a sub mix of rye with some brf or wbr?

Uncolonized it's very contam prone......fully colonized it's just as resistant as any other substrate.

This would contaminate badly. Pasteurized coir, straw or poo are what you want for your substrates. You use grains for spawn.

Ahhhh.. So innoc and spawn to something full of good mycelia food and then birth to something much more resistant to everything else. Makes sense, well its interesting to me because I wasn't able to flour my rice this time along with adding coir to the spawn substrate and I believe the air pockets thanks to the whole grains have helped colonize faster along with the coir being taken over by the mycelia right away!

If youhavent spawned to bulk yet I would use pasteurised coir and verm mixed 50-50 with a handful of gypsum. This stuff is very resistant to contamination and easy to use. If you sterilise it it still works most of the time aswell. Spawn to bulk ratio can be anything from 1:1 to 1:4. Some say they get as good results from 1:4 ratio but ive not tested enough to comment yet.....anybody out there?

I agree with Ed, but I like to stress the importance of not Sterilizing your Casing Mix. It is way better to pasteurize it. If you sterilize it, you kill all of the good bacteria that helps fight off molds and other harmful bacteria.

That's easy. However, when the solenoid sticks and floods your house while you're gone for three days, you'll wonder how much it was worth.
When someone develops an automated terrarium which will spit out contaminated cakes and bury them in the back yard, I'll admit that automation has arrived. RR

The authority has spoken, no such automation possible so let's turn this thread around.
I need something to keep my humidity up while I am gone. I was thinking of a Vicks cool mist on a timer or something economical like that. Any suggestions? I do have a humidifier but it doesn't put out a considerable amount of water vapor for what it uses. I could wrap the whole thing in a plastic tarp, would this help keep it up better than a tapestry? I felt the cloth might hold some moisture but maybe its eating it up?

Okie doke thanks guys! Much appreciated. I suppose if someone can fruit in a desert the drastic change over time won't do too much harm.
