ID this large mushroom?
    #2026747 - 10/20/03 10:03 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I found these growing on some grass in the open, trees were set back quite aways. I could not get a spore print because they were so wet and the gills were mostly destroyed. the cap is 5" across.
any ideas?

Amanita muscaria, but not in very good shape. They are probably variety flavivolvata. Note the multiple parallel rings of volval tissue near the top of the bulb in your photo (the mushroom on the right).

Happy mushrooming!

ToxicMan, you're the authority here, so what I'm going to say is just for my learning only

Isn't muscaria supposed to have a ring where the veil broke loose from the stem (lost the proper English term here, sorry)? I've never found specimens that didn't have (remnants) of this ring.

Yes, they do (originally) have a ring. But I've found that the ring is very fragile and is frequently missing. It doesn't help that the ring is also at about the spot where many people tend to grab a mushroom, so the picker often contributes to its not being there. I've also found specimens where the partial veil stayed almost completely attached to the edges of the cap instead of forming a ring.

A very close look at the stem on the right in the first photo leads me to believe I can see the remnants of a ring, about a third of the way down from the top of the stem. There isn't much left though.

Those specimens look pretty battered.

Happy mushrooming!

thanks for the ID, I thought they were some kind of amanita. I didn't know A.muscaria could be bare of its warts like these are.

ps: just for the record , that is not my floor , it is a workbench that has been outside in the rain for the last 2 weeks.

The warts can wash off. Have you been having a lot of rain?

The volva is one of the most important features for identifying Amanitas. That's why we always ask to see the bottom of the stem. Always make sure you dig to get the entire base of the stem on suspected Amanitas - some of them can go down into the soil several inches.

Happy mushrooming!
