I've eliminated the need for a protective foil layer by cutting small pieces of EZ felt into circles then (after drilling holes) cover the hole with the felt and adhere it with RTV silicon. The Felt rapidly evaporates most of the moisture off before it becomes an issue. SFD's are always the best, but I've had NO problem with EZ felt

I like to use to use the foil to my advantage. I leave it on wrapped tight around the rim until I inoculate, which is usually within 4-12h of taking it out of the PC. Then I take it off the while in the SAB so the whole lid area is still 'relatively sterile', as in no need to disinfect it.

Also lets me disinfect the jars with bleach as I'm spraying down the box without getting the filter wet.

Anyway, point is I don't take it off immediately and don't have any problems at least not the Tyvek filters I use.

With SFD's, you don't really need the foil.

I use it anyway just because of what Kizzle mentioned. I take my foil off in the SAB too.

I don't take my foil off til I'm about to inoculate. Best to not let contaminants in the air accumulate on your lid. I don't even open my pressure cooker until I'm ready to work. I open it and unload it right into my SAB.

I do the same, but I position the top of my PC right in front of my flowhood, then simply just set the jars in a row in front of it... but before that I squirt iso alc on my gloves, then wipe down every part of the PC's lid that I need to touch. I only touch the jars- not the lids- as I'm doing this.

I do it with my SAB, too, when I'm not using the hood- it's just riskier and you gotta be very careful with your movements as to not disturb the still air environment.

Sounds like perfect sterile technique to me.
