First bulk grow, sanity check.

Hi, I made my first grow (BRF) about 10 months ago and now it's time for my second grow.
I have 10 WBS jars 50 cl (~17 oz) filled 75-80% that gives me 375 cl (~127 oz) of grains. The mycelium growth was pretty fast until 50-60% was colonized, then a lot slower. The pictures is from today, 40 days later.
If I understand correctly the halt at 60% is because I used syringe filters?

1. Can I use my jars when it has started to "poop honey drops" as seen in pictures
2. I'm going to use coir, vermiculite and food grade gypsum (Calcium Sulphate). Shall I add some food grade precipiated chalk (Calcium Carbonate) to the mix as well? and how much?
3. Is it too much to use 1 brick of coir (~650g).
4. Any recommended Ratio Grain/Bulk for a first timer?

1.the honey drop poops you speak of are metabolites.
they can show up when the myc gets infected or a little warm. there are multiple things that can cause it, mainly all rooting from some sort of stress.
but it is fine to use your jars, just give em a good whif before you spawn.
2. Not sure about this one
3. 1 brick of coir is fine (you're using verm/gypsum with it I'm assuming). you may not end up using all your mixed substrate since you're using all that birdseed.
4. as far as a ratio goes, 1:2 1:3 1:4 all work fine. pretty much all I do is pour in all my spawn, usually 6 or 7 quart jars, and then pour in however much substrate it takes to get me to where my substrate level holes are. my subs are 3.5-4.0 inches deep.

40 days is a really long time. Did you shake your jars at all during colonisation? I don't know what those filters are do they provide gas exchange? If it were me I would use 1 brick of coir, 2 quarts of vermiculite and a handful of gypsum with that amount of spawn.

"syringe filters with luer lock, 13mm diameter, 0.22µm porosity with PTFE filter" The part I missed was "Ideal for liquid culture jar lids"
I have bought '9" x 12" KUNIN ECO-FI FELT WHITE 5 SHEETS' for next time. They may have been ready before day 40, but I kind of gave up on them when they stopped at 60% around day 15.
I was going to make new lids today with ECO-FI FELT when I saw that they were fully colonized, so I was caught a little bit of guard =)

But my jars is closer to 10 pint jars, not quart size... I just can't remember why I bought Calcium Carbonate.

10 pint jars = 5 quart jars.
that's still plenty for you to spawn.

Five quarts is enough to use with one brick of coir. I generally use 1 brick to 6qts but my spawn to sub ratio is on the high side 1:2 or more. Maybe you got calcium carbonate to buffer PH in peat moss casing layers but I wouldn't add it to your CVG at spawning.

That was my initial thought but I think that may just be sunflower seeds giving it that look. It would not surprise me if they were contaminated though.

Maybe I shall open one and smell it, when I made BRF it smelled just like a bag of common button mushroom. Is it possible to open one and smell it and close the lid again without contaminate the grains?

I just opened jar nr 2 and it didn't smell much at all. Just a faint smell of wet WBS. =(

Do the shake thing, but dont open any grain jar that isnt 100% colonized! if you open one you introduce mold spores so you have to use that jar as spawn, dont g2g.
so shake and smell thru the filter, see if it recovers healthy in 24-48 hrs!
Goooo Sweden!

If they were mine I would just spawn them anyway but I lack the proper respect for contams.

I guess I can just proceed as normal, I have nothing else to do with my coir and verm anyway and I need to practice pasteurization...
I got my petri-dishes and potato dextrose agar a few days ago so I better start there next time.
But I still think the problem is the Filter.

your lacking gas exchange, get rid of the whatmans those are for lc's not grain spawn

Yeah, I found out that too when I just finished inoculating all my jars so I just left them in a dark box in the basement while I was waiting for a 30 day delivery from China with new gear to make G2G and Agar.
But maybe I shall try to spawn them anyway.

You can see the mold spores on the surface of the grain. They're beneath the mycelium in those discolored areas.

A few people here think I got mold and I'm not sure if I want to pasteurize a lot of bulk just to get more mold.
1. Can I just dunk the grains and spawn them somehow? 2. If so, what shall I search for to learn more?

get some manure, dig a shallow hole outside, moisten the manure, mix in hole with grain spawn. cover with leaves/grass debris etc.
no sterility, cleanliness or pasteurizing needed, just wham bam bam!

But your kids know better than to eat mushrooms that grow on the lawn right? From your profile name I guess we live in the same region where most small lawn mushrooms are pretty bad.
If you have a compost pile or something in the end of your garden the mushies like to grow in shades from trees and bushes..

It's not a bad idea, but the house rules are that everything suspicious shall remain in a small locked room in the basement at all times.

Well, then I'd find a nice place to do it on a hiking route or right outside some woods if you like to go for walks. Chances are that animals will get most of it, but I think its cool just to see what happens when I do stuff.
Those will certainly contaminate if you try them inside, better start again and make sure to pc the jars long enough and maybe try to clean up the inoculant on agar
