Light clarification question (re: RR's comments)
    #20265116 - 07/12/14 11:46 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

In some posts, RogerRabbit seems to say that a 13-26 watt CFL (6500K, obviously) is plenty for BRF cakes. In other posts, I've seen him comment that, generally speaking, fruit growth correlates with light wattage and more is thus better.

Is there a consensus on the upper limit for useful wattage? Is 40W erring on the safe side?

RR, if you see this: Thanks for all your help!

As far as I've read. Lumens don't matter. Think about it. Shrooms don't grow in open sunshine.  Light cycle is most important.

Blue light will always be better than yellower light.

My 6500K bulb is 40W

The wattage doesn't matter (within reason).. it's more or less the amount of photons per unit time passing through a unit area.

what matters is the frequency of aforementioned photons.

"daylight" bulbs will do fine if you can't find one that is specifically 6500K

All my bulbs say "daylight" on the box and they're all 6500k.

After reading through RR entire note I found there are a few different theories and contrasting statements on everything.  I put this down to the fact that he was researching along the route and finding things out for himself.  A concise version of those notes with a 'This is how I see things now' stance would be better.  There is some great info there though once u dig through it all.

Disregard nonsense like this.  Cubensis grows in Texas and Florida in open cow pastures in direct sun.

Lumens are irrelevant.  They're just numbers like 1, 2, 3, etc., and mean nothing unless they are delineated over a specific area.(Lux)

Lux is an important measure because it refers to the amount of light over a given area. We want very bright light.  Watts are a measure of power consumed, but not of the amount of light.  The reason we say a 13W to 26W is fine for a terrarium is simply based on experience, but that light fixture must be within a few inches of the terrarium to be of much use.

Mycelium uses light as a source of energy.  More light leads to better performance. There is no defined upper limit for light exposure.  When I grew in a room with 4000K metal halide 400 watt lamps, performance was better than with 6500K CFL lamps. The latter had a closer color temp to ideal, but the former made up for it with intensity.

Interesting, and thanks for the quick reply.

So in principle, the optimal artifical light source is the highest possible wattage (again, assuming 6500K, of course), as close as possible to the terrarium, so long as temperature inside doesn't rise - correct?

Since you don't seem too gung-ho about encouraging very high wattage, is your hypothesis that returns have diminished to zero by the time we're using, say, 150W CFLs (vs. say 100W)? I understand there's no precise rule for this, but folks trust your personal judgment, RR!

I said above no upper limit of light has been established.  Many of the heaviest and densest, most potent mushrooms you'll find grow outdoors in direct sun.

There does seem to be a point of diminishing returns above a given point, so nobody needs to convert their mj grow ops over to mushrooms.  As said above, a 13W or greater 5000K to 7000K CFL a few inches above a terrarium will give satisfactory results.  Most 'daylight' CFL are labeled 6500K and are perfect.
