smell in the room
    #20262529 - 07/12/14 11:39 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone!
General question -

Terrariums in a closed room (and conditioner that works most of the time to download some temperature).Ventilated room every few hours. Is supposed to be a smell in the room?

Cakes were removed from the jar before 5 days.
Currently there is no excess water. Cakes themselves have no odor and no outward signs exceptions.
The smell reminds a bit of acetone.

Suggestions?
Thanks a lot!

Sorry for the broken English;)

I'd wait for a second opinion, but with that said..

The cakes out of the jar should have smelled like fresh mushrooms.  Not sour, bitter, or chemically. Either way they must have smelled like something.

Second, acetone is a strong distinctive smell.  If your room only has your FC inside then I couldn't imagine where that smell is coming from.  I would smell the cakes again to be sure.

Finally.  I'd close the vent or turn of the air (ventilation) off for several hours and see if the smell persist.  If it stops, you know its coming from the ventialtion.

Good luck!

your cakes should have a very earthy mushroom smell. nothing unpleasant at all. there definitely shouldn't be a smell in the room that the fruiting chamber produces.

and I highly doubt the acetone smell is coming from your fruiting chamber. I wouldn't worry about it much unless the smell is just bothering you  if it is get an air freshener :zaphod:

Were your jar 100% colonized?  5 days seems pretty quick.  If the jars were not 100% they could have containments.  Not sure it would smell like acetone.

Hi again,

Some things -
The air conditioner is not the problem.
- when the box in the room then smells strong after an hour - two hours. When its outside the room - there is no smell ..
It is important to note that within a larger room the problem is much less significant.

It is important to note again -the cakes not smell bad.

maybe another factor  Creates the smell?

the jars were 100% colonized after 4.5 weeks

The plastic fruiting chamber could be off gassing.

Anything made out of plastic can off gas.

From Wikipedia: Outgassing can be significant if it collects in a closed environment where air is stagnant or recirculated. For example, new car smell consists of outgassed chemicals released by heat in a closed automobile. Even a nearly odourless material such as wood may build up a strong smell if kept in a closed box for months. There is some concern that plasticizers and solvents released from many industrial products, especially plastics, may be harmful to human health.[4] Some types of RTV sealants outgas the poison cyanide for weeks after application.[citation needed] Outgassing toxic gases are of great concern in the design of submarines and space stations, which must have self-contained recirculated atmospheres.

It isn't outgassing.  I agree with whomever above thinks OP is confusing ammonia and acetone.

Does it smell like fingernail polish remover or window cleaner?

That doesn't sound good at all.

Glad I stopped using RTV sealant and just went with regular silicone sealant.

Your neighbor is cooking crystal meth bro. When he is soaking the iodine in the hydrogen peroxide to get the crystals to form in the closet on the shared wall the smell is wafting through the shared attic.

An earthy smell indicates mold.

Colonized grain jars smell minty to me. A combination of fresh mushrooms and mint. Smell is highly subjective. Earthy could be many different things to different people.

So PF if mold smells earthy to you, how do you describe the smell of cubes?

Hey,
The smell does not mention cleaning preparations. But yes superglue for example.

Box itself has a good smell of mushrooms, strange smell is only in the room that the boxes there.

off gassing - maybe. This is a new box, and good quality, but the smell really intense, it's weird. Maybe you're right, I do not know how to check it. but ventilated room or a large room has no smell, The problem is that the box can not be in these rooms all the time because the temperature that I need.

off gassing dangerous to the mush?

tnx
