Is this normal cube myc? [Pics]
    #20261298 - 07/12/14 02:34 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I've been struggling with cultivation for a year and this is the farthest I've ever been. My first few attempts at BRF produced absolutely nothing (not even contam). I have multiple problems ranging from climate (it's currently 104F outside) to unavailability of supplies. Subsequent attempts on grain with a fresh print stalled after the myc became slightly larger than a quarter. For the first time, I managed to colonize an entire jar. Another jar prepared from the same print's syringe stalled at 40%.

1 quart colonized on Barley (similar to Rye and far better results than millets) and then spawned to 2 quarts coir+verm. It's sitting in a minitub which is about 10 quarts in size. I made it following the usual monotub instructions, and the coir was colonized in a week. I put them under a 6500K lamp (12/12) and removed the duct tape from the 6 holes on 8th July, 4 days back.

Here are two pics of the minitub. The first one is a bit darker because of lighting. The second is closer to the actual color.

My concern is that this isn't actually cube myc but something else. The myc I have doesn't look like what I find searching for myc pictures. I'm also thinking this because it has a smell (and I keep reading that myc should have no smell) that is vaguely medicinal. No foul/stinky/fermenting smell, though. It smells sort of like what 10% lysol would smell like. This same smell was present when I was taking it out of the jar, and since I had let it sit inside for a while, I had to cut it out in chunks.

Once I put it into fruiting, I noticed some water accumulating on the cover and left one corner slightly open. The next day, the cover was dry and the surface of the subtrate looked drier too. Ended up misting and fanning it, and I think that's what contributed to the yellow patch. From today, I think I'll just mist and fan it 3-4x daily; tell me if I shouldn't.

I also don't see any knots forming and that worries me, but it's only been 4 days. I'm coming here to see if anyone with experience can tell me if this is what cube myc should look like. I've never had a successful grow, and telling me that 'it should smell like mush' is of no use. Please check out the pics and tell me what you think. I'm coming here because I'm desperate and tired after a year of failures, and searching through others' posts haven't answered my questions.

Any idea what this could be? I haven't even seen any contams that look like this :frown:

where are u getting ur spores from?
how are u inoculating ur grains or BRF? in SAB? in open air?
how are u sterilizing ur BRF/grains? steam pot? PC?
how long?
someone here can help you
maybe describe ur inoculation process
getting jars to colonize (brf or grain) healthy will be hardest part, after that it is easy..so start there, maybe u are missing a step?

it looks dry and tinfoil makes for a shitty liner and almost oystery, you should be stuffing those holes

Spores from a trusted vendor. First time, got a syringe and nothing came out of it. Second time, got two prints. The first of the prints was used for this, but it's about 2 years old. The second print, which is going to be a year old now, is still sitting in my fridge.

I did the BRF using a pot and all my grains using a PC for 90 minutes from whistle. Inoculating in a SAB but no gloves. I have a box which is wiped, set aside, and then one end is opened for taking everything inside. I wipe the inside of the box, and everything I will touch with iso.

I think the problems with my early grain attempts were all because of the moisture content being screwed up. Think I've finally got that under control. And I thought I found the mistake in my procedure since the jars where the myc stalled were PC'd for 60 minutes, and had excess moisture.

I guess I'll wait and see what happens with this, and then start working with the last print. I'm annoyed because this is something I haven't seen before, and doesn't resemble cobweb or any of the other contams people post about. GRAAAARHHH.

I misted right after taking the picture. I'm hoping that my misting/fanning and poorly constructed tub might be the problem. Still don't know if this is cube, though.

As for liner, I had read somewhere that foil was a good liner. Should I switch to black plastic bags?

And holes are covered with Micropore tape right now. No polyfill anywhere nearby :frown:

don't give up!
u can do this dude!
for ur next grow, post pics of ur jars before spawning, cause that way, if they are bad, someone cal tell you, and u won't waste time spawning to bulk
when u say print...does that mean u are scraping spores into a jar?  unless ur working with agar, u want syringes when u order, not prints.

cubensis will still pin in vitro after a while with micropore/regular tape and no FAE, with limited results, but urs is not knotting. oysters myc is good call cron, it could be
OP, u don't have to name vendor, but is it from the shroomery list?

I think I'm going to raid a few pillows and teddies.
If the problem with FAE/dryness is coming from the way I've constructed the minitub (holes too close because of size), misting and fanning 3-4x should help solve it, right?

I'll certainly do that. In fact, I should have done it this time, but I was so caught up in a jar finally colonizing that I didn't think it might be a contam. And no, I prepare the syringe from print using the shot glass tek I found up here. I didn't want to try syringes after the first one failed and somebody suggested it might be due to transportation issues and the weather where I am. But, yes, the vendor is from Shroomery's list and seems to be respected. There are only about two vendors who ship to my country and one of them only sends spores :frown:

Also, thanks a lot for your inputs, both of you!

no worries man!  i remember those days!!  i had a lot of trouble identifying clean grain spawn when i started grains, so i know how it feels to have a totally white jar and u just wanna use it!  unfortunately, its not always the case that white=clean, and with practice and experience u'll learn the difference.
in the meantime, start new jars.
brf jars steam for two hours to be safe IMO
grains u should PC at least 90 minutes @ 15psi
since u made ur own syringes, that could still be an issue (shit, even if u bought them as syringes, it can be an issue) so, even if u do everything right prep wise, failure can still follow if innoculant is dirty.

I'll start my next batch in a week. I think my grain prep is ok (time, moisture, pressure). The problem could be the syringe and I'll know soon when I start with the last print. The costs have been going up but I'm determined to grow at least one little shroom before giving up
