Working in laminar flow question
    #20258709 - 07/11/14 04:46 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Basically i just want to know how far to be from the filter, im building a flow hood with a 24x24x6 inch filter and i don't know how large to make the workspace.

If the flowhood were to output 100cfm what distance would you guys work in, or is it as far as it can bend a lighter 60-90 degrees?

I've been searching but I have seen answers ranging from 1/2 inch to 7 inches and even more, so lets see what you guys say.

Thanks!

I try to do everything as close as possible, definitely within 6 inches.

Cool, how big would you say your workspace is, like a foot and a half or so?

All sterile work gets done as close to the filter as you can manage.

I think what he's hinting around at is "how far away from the filter is laminar flow still achieved with 100cfm?"

Yeah, but it doesn't matter since all work should be done as close to the filter as possible.

That's exactly what I am asking, I'm just wondering how much space there is that you can reliably work in.
I understand that closer is better but it would be good to know how much space is workable.

It doesn't matter. All your work should be done no more than a few inches from the filter.

If you really have to know, take some petris and open them for a given amount of time at different intervals of distance from the filter. But that's honestly gonna be a waste of a few petris.
