P. Semilanceata or what? Pictures inc...
    #2025808 - 10/20/03 03:49 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Pictures:

Spore print color looks like dark red'ish Brown:

I found these mushrooms from edge of a grassy horse field where there are few pinetrees before the actual forest starts. They were all growing on grass / grass-tufts in area that was about 50cm x 50cm. They were/are 5-10 cm high.... caps 1-3 cm broad (but most of them were about 1 - 1.5 cm)... there is NO nipple on top of the caps. There are stripes on the caps and the caps have also removeable membrane. Overall color of the mushroom is light brown / tan / little yellow'ish... when dryier they are more pale/white and more clearly yellow'ish... the stems are little darker and more towards brown-red especially from bottom and their diameter is about 2mm. Gills are little darker that the caps... especially now when the mushrooms are dryier and especially on those shrooms whitch I hammered against a paper to get spore print... whitch is dark red'ish brown.

So... are these mushrooms Psilocybe Semilanceatas? If not, what could they be?

I found also these from the same field and they are definitely Psilocybe Semilanceatas:

I'd say with the spore color, stem color, lack of nipple, and absence of incurved margin that those aren't semis. They look like some sort of pan to me, but my identification prowess on pasture mushrooms is sorely lacking. Good luck.

Super nice pictures, by the way. Really clear and focused. I wish I could take shots like that. I'm very jealous.

It depends on what photos papayafuzz. The first five photos aren't semi's (or maybe but they look like a very mixed bunch apart from the second shroom from the left in the first & second photo). Photo's 6,7,8 & 9 are Liberty Caps, and the last one well as you said are definately semi's.

Xenophobic... first 12 photos are all from the same mushrooms. The one you mentioned was little dryer. There has been -5 Celcius in few nights... and days it is about +1 to +4 here in Finland.

Do you mean they were picked in the same area? or the same mushrooms? If you mean the latter then they're all libs (you can tell alot better than me in real life, than a photo). But the first five photos look pretty suspicious to me. With over 10 years experience I'de throw some of those back, even though they aint deadly. I find those (the ones that don't look like semi's to me) and many others on my travels and chuck them or not pick them at all (you can just tell) but I can't be arsed to type out all the latin names of them.

Now I would need to hear few more opinions from experienced mushroom hunters since there are mixed thoughts (MJshroomer are you reading  ) ......

I'm sure mj would say the same but he's bound to read this sooner or later. You'll get a more experienced answer from mj.

Yes they were picked from area that was about 50cm x 50cm... there were no other mushrooms on that area... the shroom you mentioned (second from left in 1st photo) was dryer than the others... apart from that I'm sure they all are same mushrooms.

semis arent purely black. they can often appear black, but they are very dark purple on a heavy print

So I guess they really are P. Semilancatas... Looking MJ's Liberty Cap pictures shows clearly how different they can be depending on where and when you pick them up. But luckily there is always some overall character that reveals Semis.

Here's a bit weird P. Semilanceata (I believe) I found today from beginning of a forest...

...it was about 20-30 meters inside a forest (from a grass field)... on a grass tuft.... I think the cap is like that because the whole shroom was frozen... it's been below zero whole day.
