Colonization?
    #2024433 - 10/20/03 12:40 AM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I was wondering if this was odd. I started my jars on the 1st of oct. it is now the 20th and several of my jars have showed little progress since week 2 (have quarter size spots of white). Should I be worried? could my jars be too dry? someone help, I'm very worried.

How did you prepare your jars?
Do you have tape over the inoculation holes?

Don?t, remove the tape.
The mycelium needs oxygen for growth.

Could be lots of things. Anno's right -- no tape on the holes; take it off, but keep the jars clean. If they have the vermiculite barrier and they're in still air they shouldn't contaminate -- no need for tape.

As long as you let the jars cool before you inoculated them and didn't burn the spores, either the substrate is just too moist (not airy) and it's taking longer to grow, or you have weak spore syringes, in which case it'll just take longer to grow. If this is the case, you could be waiting almost a month before you see anything.

if I remove the tape won't it cause my jars to dry out?

No, unless you have *really* big holes in it. They should be nail-sized holes or a bit bigger; not enough for the humidity to escape (unless they've been sitting out for months and months.)

I've had jars that took a month. Maybe, weak spore syringes. As long as contams aren't growing keep them around 83F and wait it out. Shake them!

I know a guy who just puts tinfoil over the lids, loosely to allow air to flow but keep contams out.

Your substrate might be too dry from the beginning. If growth is good but then drastically slows it might be low h2o. Also if you are worried about the whole tape thing, take the tape off and place a coffee filter (held with a rubberband) over the top. This helps co2 escape and o2 in. Do that and then a couple days later flip them. Thats what I would do, but other than that wait. Good Luck.
