Couple questions before I continue birthing

I started with 5 wide cakes in drinking glasses (all of them the same size except for one) exactly a month later I notice the 4 glasses look ready to birth, so I take them all out to dunk them tonight and notice one of them has a thumb-nail sized portion on the top that's not completely finished colonizing..
I ended up wrapping it back up figuring I need to let it finish colonizing before I birth it, was that the right move? (I wasn't using gloves mind you)
Also my cakes aren't completely submerged in water, gathering that's not a big deal? plan to leave the 3 in for 14 hours and give the last two the time they need..
My first expirement with cubes hope my questions aren't to simple

Wrapping it back up probably wasn't the right move because now that little part can become contaminated. Having them completely submerged would be best.

definitly try to fully submerge your cakes without any air bubbles for a full 24 hours. I find it makes all the difference when fruiting

to dunk my cakes, I use a tea pitcher filled halfway with water. place a couple cakes in there. then weigh them down with coffee mugs filled with water. holds them down nice and gently

So since I cannot submerge them I should leave them in for closer to 20-24 hours then 14? was about ready to take them out
I guess when those are finished I'll put the uncolonized cake that I might have contaminated in there to start birthing..
This hobby is a bit tedious
Go out to get perlite only to realize halfway back my broke ass needs a rubbermaid tin too!
Thanks for all the help guys

Maybe the dry verm layer is whats holding them up? My best guess..
Also, if I "ghetto'd" day one of fruiting until I get paid would that be alright? by ghetto I mean it most likely won't be a "see-through" container until tomorrow..
I can keep the humidity up but i'm not really sure i'd be able to do that if for 8 hours I have to crack the top open and give it florescent light

Cakes just float on their own. Keep them down with something like a plate. You have to have SOMETHING. As long as it won't float by itself and won't absorb water you're good. A bunch of rocks would seriously work. 24 hours is what you need. +- 2 or 3 hours won't hurt.
Having your cakes wherever for a day won't do too much harm, but get them in a proper FC ASAP.
And yeah, take that one out of the jar, get rid of the uncolonized part and dunk it too.

Wow you guys are so helpful! I'll indulge you all with a few more silly questions
I made my own little fruiting chamber with a Tupperware box I had laying around, steam sterilized it and let it cool out.. put 3 inches of perlite on the bottom (the box is only 7/8 inches tall at the most) wet i'd say the bottom inch and then rolled my cakes in vermiculite and placed them in the chamber, now I didn't have a lid to it though so I have some more questions...
My box is roughly 7 inches tall, 3 of them being perlite.. Should I remove an inch or so of perlite so my golden teachers have more room to grow?
I didn't have a lid and I couldn't find any damn saran wrap, so I used wax paper for the top and poked holes in the top opposed to the sides of my box because my buddy is coming over tomorrow with a drill, will this allow proper humidity levels or do I need to run out tomorrow and get a new tub with a lid? I've been misting and leaving it on my nightstand along with a simple lamp for light but will the light penetrate the wax paper? (I use duct tape all around the "lid" to seal it up every time I mist it)
Regarding what I did before the fruiting chamber, I let them sit (not completely submerged) in water for 22 hours then rolled them in vermiculite and placed them in my little fruiting chamber, I plan to go check on the other 2 and at the very least put the one with the thumb nail sized bit of missing mycelium (that hopefully has finished) in to birth (completely submerged this time!)
I'd like to include I used drinking glasses but twice as much "cc's" as recommended so my giant cakes finished in exactly a month, would you guys like some pictures?
Am I doing everything semi-right?

I feeeel like I'm asking one to many questionsss buttt I have no-one else to ask so if someone could tune in with these two I'd really appreciate it
#1 Would it make ANY difference if I was to give my cakes two six hour light cycles instead of one twelve? I don't want anyone to know what i'm doing so its been a pain keeping it on my nightstand the past two days..
#2 My S.O happeneeeed to be rushing me so I just grabbed the first translucent tub I saw, is the light going to penetrate that enough? I have it on my nightstand about 3 feet from the light (I take the lampshade off as well)
I have a cupboard I'm about to put it in soonish as well..

Don't grow in a house where everyone doesn't know and approve. If you get popped they're gonna get the same charges you do. Not to mention they'll throw everyone out on the street.
You'll be getting no more help from me now.

This is my best advice.. with some questions.
What size is your translucent tub? Pics would help.
A lid is very ideal. They are generally included in the price of the tub. With your S.O. rushing you, you probably missed out on grabbing that lid. If you have the receipt maybe you can go back and get the lid for free.
You need at least 3 inches of perlite. No less. With this said...
You need to make that translucent tub into a Shot Gun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC). Drill 1/4" holes on all 6 sides (including lid/top and the bottom). The holes should be in a grid pattern, 2 inches apart. Once this is done, use some empty jars something of the like to elevate it a few inches. Look up a SGFC tek using the search bar on this site for more info.
You can NOT move the FC to a cabinet. It will get no natural airflow and natural airflow is absolutely neccessary.
A 12 hour on/off light cycle most resembles an actual days light cycle, so 12 hours steaight is also ideal.
You might also want to get a 6500k light for your lamp if that's what you,re using to trigger pinning. 6500k is the right range for cubes.
If missed anything I'll try to edit it in.
And you can never ask too many questions. We're here to help and gald to do so.

So what? My statement still stands. Just because someone wants to get high sometimes doesn't mean they're willing to risk a 5-25 year charge (what you'd get in my state) for manufacturing a schedule I substance.

You stop risking other peoples' freedom without their consent and I will.
