Will this work for casing?
    #20252518 - 07/10/14 11:06 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I bought a 12 quart bag of Jiffy brand Natural & Organic Seed Starting Mix.

It says it contains "50-60% of Peat Moss, vermiculite, coir pith and lime for ph" I've never used a casing before but decided to give it a try after reading frank's thread on jiffy mix. His bag, however, did not contain coir. Is coir bad in a casing?

Coir is one of the most common casing materials. I won't comment on this particular product though since I have never used it

Not really....it is one of the most common bulk substrate materials, but not casing materials.

That being said, some people are starting to use it in their casing layer.

i believe stonesun used it for his sclerotia casings, and frankhorrigan used it for his casings also.

Check on that before taking it as truth

Frank listed the ingredients in his, and his did not use coir. I just don't want to use this as a casing, and it get contaminated and fuck the grow, you know?

Frank has his Jiffy casing write up but he also does use coir for casing as well.  I case all my tubs with straight coir per franks 12 steps to mushrooms and I find that it holds plenty of moisture in my substrates giving me plenty of great fruits

Okay. I guess I will give it a go once I get my tubs done. Like I said I've never did a casing before, and I figured that this stuff would be really easy to work with, no mixing or anything just bring it to field capacity and pasteurize and you're good to go. I bought it at Lowes if anybody was wondering where to get it.

People have been doing coir/verm casings for as long as I can remember.

That mix will be perfect. Hydrate it, pasteurize it and use it.

I just use the bucket tek for my bulk substrate/casing prep and I have yet to hit any contams using coir/verm.  I'm a satisfied customer

Jiffy mix has peat, though, which must be pasteurized or at least sterilized.

Oh yes definitely but I'm just saying that's why I like coir/verm haha What's the added benefit of peat if I may ask.. It seems like a bit of a head ache having to worry about PH and what not.  Correct?

It just works better IME. Better pinsets and bigger fruits. You still need to worry about pH with coir too. It's pretty damn acidic. But that's why we add lime and gypsum.

jiffy mix is ready to rock out of the bag, sin some cases it comes already pasturized, others already sterilized but either will have it right on the front of the bag so if it says nuthing pasturize it

I'd pasteurize it anyway, especially if it's not a brand-new bag.

yep always the safest bet! and when they call something sterilized all it means is the killed any type of seeds or anything that would have been in it so you should still pasturize those as well
