Extremely Slow Fruiting
    #20252445 - 07/10/14 10:53 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone, i searched this forums for a long time, but now i decided to register an account because i need your help.

I have a PF cake with B+ fluffy mycelium all over it, it started pinning a lot of tiny shrooms.
This was 2 weeks ago, then the pins just stopped growing!
It's like 15 days from first pins, some of them just grew a little, some others are just as tall as 2 weeks ago.
I keep misting and fanning 4/5 times a day but nothing has changed.

I know for sure the blueish on the cake is not mold, i touched it with a q-tip and nothing came off, so i realized is just bruising, maybe dehydratation due to my absence for 3 days.

Please take a look at the pictures and help me if you can!

peace

Almost looks contaminated. What kind of fruiting chamber are you using?

What kind of FC is that supposed to be?  A proper FC like a SGFC is essential to fruiting indoors.  This will improve everything drastically.

Without a proper FC and also fanning that often, my guess is the bruising is from to much FAE.  I'd say fan less but the building of a proper SGFC is first and foremost.

Get some perlite and drill some holes in that tub.  1/4" holes on all 6 sides, 2" apart in a grid pattern. Including the bottom and lid. Throe in 3-4 inches of hydrated perlite evenly Then elevate it a couple inches to achieve natural airflow underneath. Bam!  Mushies everywhere!

BLiNK

Thank you for your quick reply,

actually the fruiting chamber is not that pro.
It's just an old plastic aquarium with a plexiglass sheet on top.

I have some issues getting perlite where i live, is there any substitute?

That could for sure be your issue, aquariums are not overly great for fruiting, no FAE.  Build a SGFC as mentioned.  Take a tub, and drill holes in a 2" grid all over it.  Put a layer of pearlite on the lid and set your cakes on the pearlite on al foil or a jar lid an set the holed tub on tub securing it to the lid.

I don't think it dried out, i keep mysting every day, as you can see the PC is full of tiny water drops.

Maybe injection of water directly in the cake would help?

Did you dunk them?

Mist more and build a SGFC

They look a bit dry mate, it's cause of an improper fruiting chamber though. How many times a day are you misting/fanning?

You don't need to inject th cakes. Pick them up and see if they feel hefty or light, if light dunk them like 12 hr or so.

You really should've rolled in vermiculite too after first dunk, it helps create a micro climate for pins to develop.

Fresh air is extremely important for cubes, more so than humidity so take the advice about a SGFC. If you can't get perlite (order online?) you can get those clay aggregate pellets/balls. I've heard they work just not as well

The cake feels heavy, it is not dry, i already dunked it before settling in FC.
Can i dunk again the cake with pins on it?

I mist and fan the FC 4/5 times every day.

Instead of perlite i arleady used clay pellets, but after some misting, they just melt into a whole substrate of clay, when i touch it, it is soft and wet.

I will build a SGFC in the next days, modifying the aquarium and changing the old (melt)clay pellets with new ones.

I'll keep you informed, and post more pics in the next days.

Thank you for all the advices and precious help.

They are actually Hydroton Clay Balls. They do not break down or get soft and they are made to harvor hydroponic style plants. I believe you had the wrong clay balls. Perlite works the best of course but with those Hydroton Clay Balls as a second best.

Yea they shouldn't be melting, maybe aggregate was the wrong word I'm not positive but the hydroton are good to go

Oh yea and you can dunk with pins no problem

You can use the perlite from home depot but you need to wash it first to get the ferts off.

Ok, i did it.

I modified my aquarium, i drilled holes (6mm diameter) all around it.
Should i put some polyfil in the holes?

Meanwhile i dunked my cake with all the pins/small fruits.
Tomorrow i'm gonna get some clay pellets and re-birth my cake.

Hope i didn't waste mycelium, i will let you know the aftermath.

Thank you all for the advice and encouragement.

Peace

u need holes "all around it" like u said...but i don't see any on the bottom, or on the side it seems like u stopped drilling.
remember, if anything the bottom holes are most important.  thats where the air is lifted up thru the moist perlite (or lava rock in ur case), bringing with it moisture as it passes, to humidify the air.

No, you should follow a tek......like the one linked above....1/4"(6mm) holes every 2" in a grid pattern on all 6 sides.....not just near the top, and not just randomly placed.

Your holes do not cover the entire tub...some of them are bigger than others, and some are too close together, others are too far apart.

1/4" holes every 2" in a grid pattern on all 6 sides....no deviation.

my aquarium is waaaay smaller than your FCs, thats why i drilled less holes.

now i filled the entire sides with holes, following my previous (wrong?) grid.

c'mon how can a small misplacing between holes can affect the job?
even nature isn't perfect.

i'll give it a try anyway, meanwhile i gather the money to build a new bigger one.

I don't know a single tek that says smaller FCs need smaller grid patterns of holes....

the picture of mine is about the size of a 10 gallon tank the holes are 2" apart  in a perfect grid. These teks are made for a reason don't try to deviate from it.

And no nature isn't perfect but growing indoors you want to create the perfect conditions to get the best fruits imo

sorry to say this.. but your "modified aquarium" just looks like... please just follow a tek and make a proper SGFC as described in so many threads here and in the videos from RR (they are really helpful so they are a must see for mushroom grower beginners!)

They aren't clay "pellets" they are clay balls about a half inch in diameter. The pellets you speak of seem like the wrong ones considering they melt bro, that's not supposed to happen hahaha.

The advice wasn't taken to its full extent my friend. Those holes are improperly placed. You need the proper equipment (perlite and/or Hydroton clay balls).

We aren't making fun of you man, were trying to help you.

remember this tomorrow anyway, and no one will ever hold it against you in future discussions.

You just gotta take a step back and a :chillpill:

Seriously, take it easy and follow people's advice.  Someone passed it to them and they pass it to you, hence the circle continues.  Just :getstoned: and rethink what you are doing man, no big deal.  Tubs are cheap.
