Harvest question!
#20252010 - 07/10/14 08:51 AM (10 years, 6 months ago) |
|
|
Hey everyone first off I wanted to say thank you to everyone who takes the time to add knowledge and information to this site! Without you I would not have success on my first grow ever!
Here's my question though, quite a few of my mushrooms are about to break veil but there are still some primordia on the cakes that need more time before they also break veil. Should I wait for every single pin to mature and pick all at once or do I pick the mature ones and wait on the rest? Are the younger pins the second flush?

Harvest them as they mature. Cut at the base with a sharp blade as to not damage the cake.
Yes, the pins are the next flush.

So if those are 1/2 pint tall jars then those shrooms are what, like 1 1/2 - 2 inches? Seems sort of small.
Still gorgeous looking though :P

Ya theres a shit ton of them im wondering if the substrate had enough water to supply the 50 or so pins on each cake? Maybe genetics? They are P. Cubensis brazilian... either way im happy hopefully the next flush will have bigger shrooms whats an average size?

Well, I'm just basing this off the dozens and dozens of grow logs I've read, but I'd say most people end up with 3-5 inch shrooms at full maturation. Do you mist a lot?

I wouldn't be too worried since you're clearly getting fat flushes with some very healthy looking fruits.
Did you dunk the cakes? If not, dunk them after you harvest the flush. Other than that, you can try double end casing with verm.

I havent looked but maybe the stem goes to the bottom of the cake maybe they are longer than they look lol! I havent been home to check yet but will soon. I did dunk them and they have a small verm pile on top as a little water reserve ill let you guys know how many grams off first flush!

After a flush or two, flip the cakes if the tops aren't producing. Sometimes there's a whole bunch of pins on the bottom side.

Ya they seem to have an easier time fruitng at the bottom I guess ill try the flip after the second flush and see if that helps!

^ Due to better fruiting conditions near the bottom of cakes (higher RH etc)

On that note by flipping them wouldnt it make them abort because change of micro climate? I thought I read RR say somewhere if they fruit on the bottom leave it that way because thats where the correct conditions are??

Well, if he said that, I'd go by what he said. Perhaps you should work on getting the conditions right in the FC. Just some of the things I did when trying to squeeze extra flushes out of cakes. The best thing to do is to start a new grow and toss the cakes when the flushes get weaker.

Wish I could hand out some good ratings for the tips thank you! One last question the FC is in a fairly large closet is it possible that the shrooms are smaller due to stale air in between fanning?

I do mine in a closet, but whenever possible I bring them out and put them in an open space. If that's not possible, I'd say the discrepancy in size is more likely due to genetics and sometimes later flushes will produce bigger shrooms.
If you can bring them out during the day time, put them in direct sunlight for 15-20 minutes a day then leave them in an area near a window with indirect sunlight for the rest of the time.

You mean bulk substrate, not casing.
