Couple beginner questions
    #20251023 - 07/09/14 11:57 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I have had success growing with simple 1/2 pt BRF cakes in my SGFC. However, I am a little disappointed with the yield so I've decided to try and crumble up my remaining cakes and mix them with about 2-3x more coir, and do small trays instead of cakes.

I pasteurized the coir and added the crumbled cake, left the tray to colonize for five days and today I introduced it to my SGFC. Now, is there a way I am supposed to "dunk" this tray? And, how much more shroomies can I expect from a small tray spawned from a 1/2 pt jar as apposed to a PF cake?

Now some unrelated questions. I plan to use WBS in my future jars so I can do g2g and spawn them to bulk more easily. I realize you're supposed to shake the jars at about 30% colonized to make it go faster, but are you supposed to put a top layer of verm to block contams falling through the holes in the lids when you use WBS jars? If so, won't shaking it spread the contaminated verm all throughout everything? And if no layer of verm, how am I supposed to protect my substrate from contams and still keep the holes open to allow GE? Also, when doing the g2g process, what is the likelihood of contams getting into the jars when you open them to add the colonized grain?

I'm starting with 1/2 pt jars to add my LC, but should I g2g them into more 1/2 pints or go bigger? Potentially into qt jars?  :amanita2:

Oh, almost forgot. Should I be misting the trays/cakes directly every day or just misting inside the tub, like on the walls and floor? Do I stop misting when pinning starts or just keep going until harvest?

Aaand, that should be all my questions for now.

my first bulk was 1/2 pint spawned to 4.5 times that amt of coir/verm/coffee

do not dunk a bulk tray before first flush, unless, for some reason, it seems really dry, but even then, its probably saturated enough for a good flush.
u do not want verm barrier in grain jars.  u want a proper filter in the lid, best being SFD, then polyfill, then tyvek as poorest performing one, but still doable (certainly better than verm above grains tho)

grain to grain u need TOTALLY sterile process.  in an SAB or hood.
don't even think about an LC until u can get a g2g down.
do you have a PC?

I have plenty of polyfill. How should I incorporate that into my lids?

I do have a PC, yeah.

Looking at your pictures, I can confidently say that my tray was only maybe 90-95% colonized. It isn't 100% white like it is in your pictures. There are small bits of coir that're still brown poking out randomly. Is that a huge problem or should I just expect it to take a bit longer to start pinning?

I also am not making my own LC, I ordered a syringe off the internet from one of the shroomery sponsors.

thats a spore syringe then... unless ur lucky...active mycelium is illegal to sell in the US, be it a slant, plate or liquid medium

if u used only coir, verm and gypsum(or no gypsum) its not bad off if it was not 100% colonized, although ideally, it would be for best results.  but yea u can still expect fruits.  i would anyway.  keep it moist, but not wet.  think visible moisture beads on cobwebs, dew drops, etc.  not saturated, not dry...somewhere in btw will be ur happy medium.

for lids...have u watched the RR video, he goes over that.  also FrankHorrigans teks do as well, the one i think is called "12 steps to Bulk mono tubs" or something like that.  the technique is in there for poly lids...or just search lid TEKS.  i never used poly lids, i went from Tyvek to SFD's right away.  i'd say there will be someone who will chime in when they wake up about poly lids, its pretty common practice for users here.  if they are not using SFD's, they are using polyfill.

Oh, yeah. I thought LC meant the same thing as a spore syringe. I understand the difference now

I guess I'd prefer SFDs if I can find an easy tek on how to make them. Or would it be easier to buy them pre made somewhere?

You sir are very helpful.

never heard of someone making them.
if u wanna make ur own lids, stick with polyfill for sure.
some people think SFD's expensive, some do not.  u use them indefinitely...so price over time goes down with each use.

these are our vendors and most have SFD's for sale
outgrow, myco supply, everything mushrooms, i think those 3 i have bought SFD's from.  u can use them whole, or look up lid teks, where people cut them and turn each SFD into 6-8 lids, saving money.  u will need RTV as well, about $5-9 at home depot/hardware store

again, just search for "lid TEK" and you will undoubtably find several variations of the same idea with them.

Citric's lid tek is what I used with SFD.  SFD are worth it if you are only cutting disks you can get about 4-5 per SFD.  I bought a pack of about 30 SFD for a relatively cheap price and since I cut them up I still have a bunch.  Worth the investment, especially since it's a lot of labor to make good lids using silicone, you don't want to do that more than is necessary if you value your time.  When cutting the SFD, use a quarter to make the right size and outline it with a pen or pencil.

I've also heard that if you are caught cutting up tyvek from the post office you may be guilty of another crime.
