Compost Type
    #2025083 - 10/20/03 12:04 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all.

I'm wondering if seaweed/crushed shell based compost is as effective
(or effective at all) in comparison to dung based compost. I'm refering to its use as a bulk substrate.

I can't find this info anywhere on the site.

Thanks in advance,

John

Seaweed gels, so it would probably be really hard to get a good water concentration, even if you chopped it up. Seaweed also has a lot of polysaccharides in it in addition to cellulose so it would probably contaminate pretty easily.

Other than that, I don't know. Doesn't sound like a very specific substrate.

Why seaweed? You don't even need dung, straw works fine and it's almost as cheap as dirt.

It comes in a bag from a gardening store. But it claims to be seaweed based. It looks like regular compost. Not being a gardener by trade, I'm not sure if this will substitute.

Straw has worked well for me in the past, but when I went to the store, I accidently picked up this strange bag of compost. Basically, I'm wondering if I should bother experimenting with it or not. I don't know if our little fungus frinds thrive on crushed shell and decomposed seaweed.... I was hoping that someone here had an idea or had tried it.

What other ingredients are in the compost? Any type of animal shit ?Does it look like seaweed? The compost that I've seen used it cow manure, leaves and bark, but most of the stuff is so broken down it all looks like cow shit with a few little twigs, works great. If it is feces-based, or contains feces, and has seaweed mixed in that is totally composted, it should be ok. Might wanna check the pH tho. Keep us posted!
