Norwegian P. semilanceata - my earliest find so far
    #20249151 - 07/09/14 05:43 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

So I was walking in the woods - a mix of fir, birch, alder and pine. A trail used as a ski track
during the winter (whenever there is snow, that is). The mushrooms I find in this area are
usually the "typical" woodland species - Entoloma, Russula, Lactarius, Cortinarius etc.

But then suddenly, on the side of the trail, I saw this:

The habitat:

This grew a few meters away, no idea. Seems to have purplish brown spores too:

Date proof (local newspaper):

That other mushroom is pretty interesting.  Do you think it could be more P. semilanceata?

I'm not sure what it is. It was not in the best shape, yet not dried out like the semilanceata.
The cap was about 4 centimeters wide, stem fragile/hollow. Psathyrella is possible I guess.
I collected it.

In any case there was both footprints and dung of sheep in the area, however no animals
present at the moment.

My guess is that it is a liberty cap also, would be cool to see the microscopic features.

Microscopy would surely tell, yes. Not always easy to tell by macroscopic features
when the size is so different from the "standard" - I get easily confused (or maybe
I should say biased/prejudiced by habit). But by concentrating on the descriptive
details I see it could be a Psilocybe.

A magnified shot of (what is left of) the gills show little lumps of purplish-dark-brown
spores:

It looks like an old thrashed P. semilanceata to me. Could the fragile stem be do to decomposition?

Perhaps. It was also a bit waterlogged. Often when I find big specimens they tend
to have hollow and somewhat fragile stems like this one had. My bad I didn't check
for a pellicle when it was still wet...

Sweet find Angler!!!

:congrats:

Thanks guys!

I've got one spot usually delivering the first fruits around late July, which is in
a residential area, short grass lawn style habitat.

Never found them this early, although I know of at least two early-July finds in
Norway from a couple of years back.

The place I found these yesterday is not what I'd consider a habitat for semilanceata.
The sheep that left tracks and dung are probably stray animals from the other side of
the mountain, where they graze in the summer.

Regarding the larger, odd one out, I'm still not convinced it is a Psilocybe. We'll see...

Yes, the forest libs has returned! Kjempeflott!

My theory: This habitat is a bit colder and damper than the pastures/big open lawns, which make this perfect for an early flush.

And it looks like you have some Deschampsia cespitosathere as well (hard to tell, but I think I see at least one)... Check the grass species in the future, I think you also will notice that some species can be sorted out from the scan and some are more probable to have libs, therefore worth looking at more carefully. I am doing this when I'm riding my bicycle in the forest now days, due to my unexpected discovery from last year:

I hope you find some more

My theory too. The spot is in a small vale at about 450 meters altitude between some low hills and a lake and a larger hill of about 600 meters.

I also recognized this - although the area containing this grass was very small. In one of the
specimens there was also featured the typical moss attached to the stem base (I forget the
name of the moss but you know which one).

Me too. I frequent this area a lot, both for just walking but also because it harbours
a good variety of mushrooms. Now also liberty caps! I'm quite astonished.
