pmp for casings question
    #2024903 - 10/20/03 10:33 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

how have ya'all modified your poor man's pods for casings? today is the birthday for 3 pf-cakes cased with jiffy mix. i think the protocol is 99% humidity to get pinning, but then drop to 90%-ish while fruiting. how did folks out there decrease humidity? less water? more holes?

No, you don't need that much humiditiy for casings, just enough so the casing won't dry out. It ends up being more like 70-75% but it depends, of course, on the humidity of the room and the temps. I've been able to grow fine in a covered rubbermaid in the dead of winter when ambient rH in my room was ~ 30-35%. Don't worry about it. Just fan and mist and you should be fine.

When running through the casing, you want the casing to be airy (crumble it with your fingers when applying it to the substrate) you want the temps at incubating temps (80-85 F) and a little CO2 buidup, and don't mist unless it's getting dry. Once the mycelium is popping up in spots evenly arround the casing surface, fruit it -- cold shock if you can (putting it in a fridge works fine) and drop temps to 70-75 F after that and fan and mist daily (or as needed.) No reason to control the humidity if the casing is covered -- just make sure it has enough room for air (at least 7-10X the substrate volume.) As long as you do all this you should be golden.

Oh, and make sure you add enough casing.

Link to the casing/substrate ratio please?

Thanks

To do a mod to the PMP so you can adjust the rh.

Put two holes in the lid. About a inch in size. Then take two pieces of rubber and put a screw threw each piece. Mount them over the holes in a way that they can slide over the holes making them bigger or smaller. With this you can adjust the rh from about 80% up. The reason I say 80 is mine can hold 75 to 80% rh with the lid off.
