Foil wetness
    #20248835 - 07/09/14 04:43 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

First off I am new to this fantastic site and want to thank everyone for all the great information that has been provided here.

I am a first time grower and have a question on what is recommended I do in this situation.

I put four nail holes in the lids of my jars, pressure cooked them for the required time in about two inches of water, inoculated them and covered with one layer of folded foil and one layer of unfolded foil over the lids. This was done Saturday night (July 4) and in checking the jars today, I have found that the foil layer underneath is still west from the pressure cooking process.

Should I take these out and dry them or just leave them? I'm afraid that the wetness will cause major contamination in the form of mold etc.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

remove the foil at inoculation and leave it off, it has served it's purpose

if you're doing pftek jars then you don't need foil at all after you PC.

the whole purpose of the foil is to keep moisture droplets that form on the lid during your pressure cook from falling into the jars and messing up your moisture content.

you can take the foil off

All set! They are sitting comfortably in the dark at a nice 84 degrees.

They'll grow in the dark, but they don't need to be in the dark.  Just an FYI.

I thought they had to be in pitch black while the jars colonize... What's the extent of this? Can I just keep a jar on my desk by the window and expect it to grow normally?
