compost/poo consistency after pasteurization
    #2024760 - 10/20/03 08:03 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Should the compost / poo be wet when I mix it with spawn? I let it drain 24 hours over a sink (clean) and it has a mud-like quality to it, rather than being dry.

It should be on the very damp side, mud-like sounds like being too moist.

Hrm. Would that prevent mycelia growth? I'd say that it probably is classified as "very very very damp", but not soaked.

My fiance showed me an easy way to do this from begining to end: When pasterizing I put the compost/poo in an old pillow case and use a 5lb weight off an old weight bench to hold it underwater. Then after boiling, I put the weight on top of the pillowcase over the sink on a rack and the weight mashes out all of the excess water. I usually turn it over 4-5 times in a 10-12 hour period and it comes out perfect everytime.

I really wish I'd had read this earlier. Will it being "soaked" prevent an mycelia growth?

yes, if it is muddy it will be too thick for the mycelia to penetrate through. Best to start over. Poo and straw is cheap and not worth wasting your time with mediocrity and risk of failure when you can acheive greatness.

only time will tell. but now you know. and knowing is half the battle.

any drainage in the tub you innoced in? best way to tell if you have to much h20 is to pick up the substrate and squeeze. if water kind of drizzles out of your hand and doesn't shoot out your ok.

if it were me i would probably just squeeze out the excess water now.
ask shirly before you do so.

God fucking damn it.

I used all of my cakes. I'm gonna have to wait for more WBS to colonize now. I'll just let it incubate and pray.

For future reference, placing the pillowcase between two pieces of flatly laid plywood and applying downward pressure (i.e., standing/jumping) to the upper piece works well. This guy I know did his at an angle off of his front porch.

Awesome, you guys are so cool  I really appreciate this help.  I'm considering just stirring thecompost layer in with the straw/compost, and hoping that "thins" out the mud-like layer, sound good?

I'm going to try the pressing between 2 pieces of wood technique next time. I was going to "stir" up the compost with the straw/compost, but when I looked at it, some of the mycelia in the poo had already started to "fuzz" outwards. I'm going to let it go and pray this time, hopefully next time will be a bit more sucessful. If only the straw/poo colonizes, then I'll know that this straw, and this compost, are effective, and i'll go from there. Most likely what I"d do in that situation would be to stir it up then, break apart the straw/poo cake and mix in the top poo layer. Or just turn it upside down so that the colonized straw/poo are on the top.
