Trich between dry verm layer and cake

Hey guys, I'm doing a BRF tek and using syringes to inoculate. Almost all of my cakes had trichoderma growing from the point where the cake meets the dry verm layer. I threw all of them out safely. Do any of you know what causes this? I tried to search around but it didn't really seem like anyone else was having this issue. I took the covers off about a week in to allow for better air exchange. Could it have been that? Or could it be that during sterilization, the dry vermiculite layer was not sterilized properly? I had them in a boiling pot above the water for about 90 minutes. Thanks.

Well usually the verm contam barrier does it's job as long as it is both dry and undisturbed.
It may have gotten wet, and moved from handling.
But also if the innoc holes were open, a trich spore may have entered through there.
In addition to keeping the verm dry (via good prep/foil while sterilizing, unfoil when done innocing) and undisturbed (handling less), you can apply micropore tape to keep the holes protected from falling trich spores

I'm truly surprised this isn't more heavily recommended with PF Tek cakes. Taking that extra step of precaution for as little as 2 dollars is worth it.

In a pressure cooker? Because thats not sterilisation if its not under pressure.

Steam sterilization is still sufficient for BRF(brown rice flour) cakes.
