I didn't figure it made sense to cut the holes just to cover them back up. I can easily lay a few paper towels or something over the surface when I cut them to catch the shavings.

Well you're gonna use the tub again I'm sure so you might as well get use to it . I don't recommend using trash bags as liners as you've been recommended to use. I use painters plastic which is much thicker and more durable. If you use trash bags you won't be able to pull out your substrate during harvest time. You're going to have a hell of a time harvesting without a liner. Pulling out your substrate during harvest saves a lot of energy, reaching into your tub to harvest is a tiring process. Also during colonization if you have a liner, the beads of moisture will fall behind the lined substrate instead of creating pooling on your substrate, you can avoid bacteria this way.

I've never heard of completely removing your substrate to harvest - is this normal now?

Lol. The female wouldn't let me use up the good t rashbags so I made a few liners out of smaller bags cut up. Side fruits everywhere bottom fruits fruits growing tangled up in the bag.. what a mess.
Its fucking thick dropcloth from now on... the good stuff

I'll tell you the way I cut my first monotub holes for when it comes time to do your own. I used a glass on the inside of my tub, pressured up against the side to catch the plastic shavings.

Get the big box of contractor grade trash bags at the home depot man. I can get 3 tubs per bag. I think its like 4mil or something like that, I'll have to look at the box next time i am out there. I seem to have better luck using liners as far as sidepins and multiple flushes go. Also leaving the liner on. Every tub i removed the linner from and flipped ofer after the second flush trichd this round of 8 tubs. The two I just harvest and mist, going on flush 4 now. I did get mondo 65 g fruits out of it in 3rd flush.

That's an even more simple idea! Perfect, thanks for the tip.
Sounds like I will be making my next tub with a heavy duty liner too. I've seen the pictures on here of people with their grows removed from the tub via the liner, just never really put two and two together to realize how much easier it is for harvest.

so why do we consolidate cakes? just so they don't fall apart easily?
I thought all substrate whether it be cakes or not consolidated before they fruited.

I think you consolidate the cakes so the m yc has a chance to eat up alot of its food INside the jars so they don't dry out while waiting to fruit in the FC.
I think that'd the idea behind it at least

I thought all substrate whether it be cakes or not consolidated before they fruited.
Since cakes are not mixed like bags there is a chance its not 100% on the inside, to my knowledge that is why.

RogerRabbit said: For years, anytime someone would say to give an extra week to allow the center to colonize, I'd jump in and try to set the record straight, but I got tired of typing the same thing dozens of times for nothing, so now I only type it once a month or so.
When the outsides of a jar are fully colonized, the center will be also. There is far more substrate on the outside edge of the jar(because it has more area) than on the inside, so there's no way the inside would not be colonized as well.
The reason for waiting a week after full colonization is to allow the mycelium to consolidate its hold on the substrate. Until the mycelium digests some of the substrate it has colonized, it will not fruit. If you birth the day of full colonization, the week spent consolidating the hold, will be a week spent drying out the cake, thus making pinning harder and yields weak. If you wait a week after full colonization, pins often form within 48 hours of birthing/dunk and roll.

Well I will be damned, that is why I don't do cakes lol, I don't know enough.

so surely the same principle carries over to bulk subs?
I guess you wouldn't have to worry about them drying out nearly as much though. especially in a monotub.

I have to say if people are getting tired out picking mushrooms from inside a tub they might want to consider actually getting some exercise every now and then (of course if your tub is the size of a swimming pool i understand) Slart
