bulk substrate recipe
    #20245751 - 07/09/14 01:16 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

With my next go around of 27qt  tubs, I was thinking of branching out from using just coir and gypsum. I was thinking about adding a few other ingredients. What do you think of this recipe?

4 qts. Wheat straw pellets
4 qts. Coco coir
4 qts. Medium grade vermiculite
1 qt.  Gypsum
1 cup Chicken manure

That seems like a whole lotta gypsum man, a 'handful' is good for a tubs worth of bulk Is what I always read, I used 6-7 tablespoons just to have a measurement

Thanks for the replies. I read anywhere between 2-5% chicken manure was acceptable but if you say 5%, I'll give that a try. I also read that 10% gypsum was acceptable.  10% of 12 qts of dry sub is 1.2qts. Do you really think I should use less than 10% gypsum, how much would you suggest?

12 qts equals 48 cups. 2.5% of 48 cups is 1.2 cups. So, the chicken manure is within that 2-5% range. What do you think of the wheat straw pellets? Has anyone tried them?

Awesome. Thanks. I must be on the right track. Still trying to dial in my environmental conditions but once I get that set, I should be golden.

I've been working on 27qt sterlites with locking lids. The design is sort of a hybrid shotgun monotub. Currently I have 1/4 holes just wrapping around the tub just above the substrate and they are 2 inches apart. I was thinking about going 1 inch apart. The top holes are the same as bottom holes and are 2 inches from the top of tub. I have a window ac unit to keep the temp around 72*f constant.
The ac blow air toward opposite side of the room as the tubs.

Edit: the rh in the room stays between 50 and 60%.

This may seem like a stupid question but should I crumble the wheat straw pellets or should I leave them whole?

there gonna crumble when u moisten them anyway when u bring it to field capacity.

Haha. I knew it was a stupid question. Too many grave yard shifts in a row. I have another question, this one not as stupid. Are these pellets capable of being a stand alone substrate?

not sure
monkeyjesusfresco uses them...but not sure if he does it alone or mixed.
i use just regular straw, but always kinda wanted to play with the pellets.
maybe spawn a cake to it or just 1/3 of a grain jar and see how it does.
seems like a quick way to bulk up a coir substrate and increase nutrient source for sure, but i do not think it will have the advantage regular straw does, with hollow stems and aerated patches, which increase speed of colonization.
also not sure if water holding capacity the same with plain straw vs. straw pellets.
either way, adding it to a bulk sub is good, u want a diverse array of nutrients for best performance.
def post ur results tho man!!  make sure u keep good notes, like ratio used and prep method, so the rest of the community can benefit from the success or fail (hopefully success)

pellets alone should work.

when i use strawpellets for oysters i hydrate 1,2 kg of strawpellets with about 2 liters of water, but not all pellets are the same so you should experiment a bit.
i pour the hot water over them, close the bucket with a lid, and shake it now and then in the hours after that.
there are probably still some pellets compressed after that, but that's fine, better than that it's all too wet and compact.

Thanks for the advice everyone, i really do appreciate it.

Forrest, If I were going to add medium grade verm to the straw pellets, would I add it after hydrating the pellets or before?

Blindingleaf, I wanted to eliminate the coir all together because for the same price I get twice as much straw pellet. The pellets also hold  just as much water at field capacity as the coir. Both product packages say they expand up to 5-6x it's volume. So referring to the OP, I just want to replace the coir with it's share in pellets and keep everything else the same. Does that seem doable?

Thanks again.

gotcha, its a price thing.
seems doable for sure.
u might want to include a nitrogen source tho, maybe a supplement, like chx manure, earth worm castings, etc.
soybean hulls or something.  I'm pretty sure wheat straw is lower in N than coir.  even lawn clippings have a good level of nitrogen.  some u can go as high as 30-50%, other, like chx manure, its safer to stay low, like 5% or less.
here is a good thread about additives
start there, and try different things.

maybe even with no additives it will perform well, but for optimal performance and health of a substrate, it would be good to look into and learn about.

As I mentioned in my OP, I was adding 2.5%(composted) chicken manure. The brand is called chickity doo doo. I've read somewhere that linoleic acid was good for yields, is this true? I have 1000mg capsules of safflower oil which contains up to 84% conjugated linoleic acid. Would this be safe to use?
