First grow, what am I doing wrong?
    #20242841 - 07/08/14 03:41 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, I posted in contamination with a similar post, because part of what I'm worried about is 'are these going to be okay? do these look healthy? What the hell are these black things doing in here?' I have not received a response there yet, and I'd like to correct things sooner rather than later.

I did as much research as I possibly could to make sure my jars colonized properly and I tossed one jar with some spiderweb mold. I'm fairly certain they went into the fruiting chamber healthy.

But now that they've been fruiting for a while [a week now], I've got really inconsistent growth.
I've got a few cakes that only have a couple of batches of pins [and some of the pins have black caps], and I've got about 5 or 7 mushrooms that have dropped their spores already.

So I guess my question to this section of the forum [I apologize for posting twice, I know that forum-regulars typically hate stuff like that]... is 'What am I doing wrong?'
It's humid enough in there [99% pretty consistently]
I've got a fishtank air pump blowing air into the tub for 30 minutes/30mins off all the time.
I've taken off the lid a few times, misted the whole thing, and put a fan on them for like an hour.
They are in a corner of an unused room and receive indirect sunlight for about 6-8 hours a day [but my lid is NOT clear, so no light hits the top... thinking about cutting most of it away and replacing it with plastic wrap for better light]
3 pictures of my tub are below.

I appreciate any guidance.
Thanks!

Scozz

Okay, so more airflow, and more light.

It took me a while to find exactly what a SGFC was. Basically my tub with a ton of holes, right?

Would it make it too dry if I just removed the top? That would help with air as well as lack of light.

FYI, I didn't roll them in perlite, I was informed [by someone who doesn't know what he's doing, apparently] to sprinkle a layer on top of the cakes.

So what should my next steps be? Should I harvest what I've got, dunk the cakes, and try it with a tub full of holes?
Are the few big dudes in there okay? Some of them have black areas on the stems. I think it might just be bruising?

Thanks for the link, somehow, in all my information travels, I've not come across that resource. Kinda wish I had.

Again, thanks for the help.

Noob-McGee appreciates it.

I would harvest them and wait a day or two then dunk and ASAP get the holes drilled in he correct pattern. Just taking the lid off won't work nearly as well, the SGFC works a certain way and needs to be done right. Read spitballjedi post about it

Thanks, Mdahmer. Appreciate your hasty response.

Is everything you see 'okay' to be harvested/ingested?

Should I toss the black headed pins?

What should I be doing with the cakes while I'm 'waiting'? Leave them in the tub?

I'll search up his post and learn everything I can.

EDIT: After searching for like the 8th time for it, I found that post. I think I'm just going to get a brand new tub, a little taller, and a little more.... not opaque.

Yea they are safe to eat. The black one I can see is just aborted, if any are like mushy and gross I'd toss the cap.

After harvest some suggest letting them sit in the FC for a day or two without misting to kinda rest a bit before their dunk and second flush, I also do this but some don't they just dunk right away

Holy shit, you're lucky you got fruits at all. Some of those look meaty too.

You say you researched as much as you possibly could, but that is clearly relative.

You need to get some holes drilled into that fucking tub. Research some more on th SGFC(shotgun fruiting chamber).

As hard as it may seem I'm being on you, you did pretty well considering. You must be doing some things right. Once you tweak your set up I can picture some great cakes coming from you.

Get a 6500k fluorescent in a desk lamp pointed at those things as well. Make sure it is 6000-6500k spectrum. Cubensis like the blue light spectrum.

:smirk: yeahhhh yeahhhh yeahhhhhh

Well, to clarify, I did a ton of research to get my substrate going.

I guess my fruiting chamber research stopped once I found a 'good idea.'

Which it clearly wasn't.

I'm headed to the store to pick up a new tub and... something with which to 'drill.' [I'm broke as shit, will probably end up spending a couple hours stabbing plastic with a screwdriver, hah!]

Thanks again for the input, guys.
I'm a little embarrassed, but hell, if I didn't ask, I would never have gotten on the right track...right?

I remember my first SGFC.  I sat there for 2 hours with a candle and screwdriver...hahaha.

If you're low on funds be careful making the SGFC.  If you get impatient you can easily crack it trying to punch/drill the holes.

Now I have a drill and a set of bits.. even a 4 1/2" arbor for SABs.

Best of luck and keep us posted once your SGFC is built.

I was walking through the store and ran across the dremels... which reminded me I had a dremel... and a drill bit! FREE HOLES!

Also, I got a taller tub with a freaking [almost] clear lid!

Time to make my cakes happy cakes.

Don't be embarrassed(jk, you should be).

You're getting on the right track, good for you.

Make sure to space the holes correctly, on all 4 sides AND the bottom(but not the top).

The sgfc should be elevated to allow the proper airflow.

Hey it seems you did everything correct u ntill it came time to fruit so give ur self that.

Alot of people mix up perlite and vermiculite.

You want about 5 inches of damp perlite in the bottom of your FC. I used less my first time and had major troubles with cakes drying up

Why do you say that? a SGFC has 1/4" holes in a grid pattern on all 6 sides.

I've actually come across both sets of 'correct' information on this site. Spitballjedi's post mentions all 6 sides [incl. top]. I wonder, however, if it would keep humidity up better if the top was not punctured [humid air will want to rise, get 'caught' at the top, and push the drier air out the sides].
On the other hand, without the top punctured, total air volume transfer is ~20% less.

I think I'm still going to do all 6 sides, as this way is more prevalent in these forums [afaict].

I'll keep you guys posted,
Thanks again for the support!

making uneducated guesses huh? :tongue2:

if you trap the air inside the box you wont allow new air to come in through the bottom holes and the perlite,
hence REDUCING your RH..

Where have you seen holes on 5 sides advocated before on this site?

:whathesaid: "Trapping" humidity at the top will have negative effects on the performance of the SGFC.

As heat and humidity exhaust out the top holes, air gets pulled in thru the bottom holes and up thru the perlite, rehumidifying the system with fresh air. It's a constant, automatic, natural process.

And I have not seen a single post about just putting holes in 5 sides......I can however link to hundreds of posts from just this year alone, specifying 1/4" holes on all 6 sides.
