Small Terrarium Humidity and Temp Control Advice
    #20244246 - 07/08/14 07:36 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hi guys, I'm new to growing and wanted to start a post discussing the methods and techniques to go about insuring proper humidity and temperature (in a stationary pf tek grow) for the stages of cubensis growth. I am awaiting my syringes and have my terrarium almost up to par.

Following the PF Tek method but here are my specs

I am currently using a 11x16x10.7 inch terrarium for 4 cakes
There are holes spaced 2 in. along the bottom for CO2 to escape.
I have temp control using a heating pad (to within about 3 degrees F
There is temp and humidity monitor inside which i have hovering around 97%
2 1/2 in. of perlite.
(i'm testing my control over the terrarium to ensure success)

My basic question is how can I decrease humidity when it comes time to fruit? One idea I've read is to drill holes and plug them until fruiting, but I'm worried that may decrease the temp too much.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Then keep it but drill the holes using the shotgun FC method it will keep your humidity higher

You need to try and heat the space around the chamber. Using a heat pad will cause your tub and cakes to dry out and will do little to actually heat the air inside the chamber.

If you use the search feature in the top right hand corner and click on "Search Our Forums", you will find many posts about heat pad troubles.

even heat bombs are dangerous for grain spawn if they're sitting too close,
a heat pad is like asking for trouble.

and a heat pad covering the bottom holes of a sgfc?

So I take it you built the sgfc wrong, have almost no holes in it and use a heat pad underneath it all?
Where's all the air supposed to escape? heat rises ya know..

i plan on fanning several times daily, holes are also for ventilation for humidity and it lets out the perfect amount of heat for pinning, hence my issue. I think drilling more holes to let out humidity and turning the heat up a touch to make up for heat escaping, will do the trick. what up with the insult by the way. no need for it. duh heat rises

you got everything all bassackwards here, your house is not too cold unless your living in an igloo, you don't want or need a constant 97% or better rh you want some flucuations to happen to make room for evaporation to kickstart from time to time which ius y we fan our chambers out, quit worry about temps and rh and focus on fae and lighting:wink:

a radiant heater like this one

Will allow for the room temperature to be raised without messing with the air flow and humidity.

Ditch the heating pad.

I will have to come back to this silly idea later i guess. I have a regular sgfc drilled and ready to go but really wanted to have that temp control. thanks for the input guys

I'm curious why you asked for advice if you had no intention of taking it?  Build a shotgun terrarium and heat the room if necessary, not the terrarium.  Of course if you keep your house within normal room temperature, you don't have to heat anything.

i am taking the advice. shotgun it is. always have to listen to those who know best. sure appeared stubborn because of the time invested but i want to be successful and sgfc's have worked for everyone else.
