Lid shifted on Pressure Cooker while reaching pressure
    #20241329 - 07/08/14 09:36 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I obtained a free pressure cooker, it is a 22 quart M-0522 Mirro Matic. It didn't come with a weight, and the seal was old and stiff so I bought a new weight and seal. So I got a good pressure cooker for about a total cost of $30. It is the kind with the jiggler weight at the top. It don't have a pressure gauge. It has a vent underneath one of the handles that constantly vents steam.

To my question. I put the new seal in and filled it with cold water and put the lid on. Put it on high and waited till a little bit of steam came out. Then put the weight on. Steam was coming from the lid were the vent was, and not around the seal. Out of nowhere while it was getting pressure up the lid did a very slight twist in the reverse direction. About 1/8th inch to 1/4th inch twist. This scared me, so I shut it off, and slowly released the pressure built by rocking the jiggler manually.

So is this something normal that happens with this pressure cooker? Was it just shifting into a place were it wanted to be to reach pressure? Or what was going on here? It doesn't seem to have any safety locks to lock the lid down. I just don't want this thing to shoot the lid off and blow steam in my face. I don't have instructions for this pressure cooker and I've searched online and can't find any.

This is my first time using a pressure cooker of this kind, I am used to the ones with the pressure gauge where you have to manually twist a knob on the weight to keep pressure. Sorry if I'm just being a scared little girl. Pressure cookers scare the shit out of me.

I guess I'm going to test it again only on 5 psi this time.

I know what the culprit of the shift was. When it starts building pressure it pushes a little metal thingy down into a part of the lid so it can't move while pressure is high. That's why it shifted the lid slightly. Or atleast I hope that's why.

Everything seemed fine at 5 psi. I will test it again later at 15. I'm still warming up to this pressure cooker. I'm gonna do 10 jars tomorrow evening if all works out.
