How to tell if I have bad spawn?
    #20238658 - 07/07/14 06:45 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

My last grow was a DISASTER. Everything contammed once I started FAE in the tubs, 10 days after spawning.

The jars looked and smelled fine. Nothing about them would make me think it's bad spawn. (PC'd wild bird seed)

Then all 15 of my tubs contaminated more or less within the same week.

I was told that it's most likely bad spawn.

I pasteurize 1.5 hours coir/vermiculite with right consistency.

I'm 99% sure that I fucked it up when I used a spore print instead of G2G. I didn't have any grains at the time. The closet had moldy cakes I hadn't taken out yet that were  in my green house.

But again, how can you tell if your spawn is bad, so you don't have to waste good sub to find out 2 weeks later?

post a pic here for your best bet lol, other then that you just need to visually see how it looks and smells and if in doubt shake it up and see how it recovers, lots of molds like trich don't like to show there face on grain spawn

No real way to know 100% without agar. Smell helps a lot, consistency, etc

u want even growth all around the grain.  it should look uniform.  no super white spots either.  plus what they said!!  even with agar, things can sneak in

What would the super white spots be? I noticed that on my agar but was pretty sure it was myc.

Interesting. How long does it typically take to turn green?

Linear mycelium is what we want for cubes, haywire mycelium is alot of contaminants.

I smelled the jars. And they smelled like mushrooms. Like any other grow I've had.
Now, the super white trich, I've seen and it can be confusing the first time you see it.

That might be Chaetomium and not Trich.

Cool! :takingnotes: But Trich look similar before it goes green? I just go by that scabby, super white appearance. Or by smell if I can, that's an instant give-away.

Is it possible for my spawn to be bad but NOT smell or look out of the ordinary?
As in, is there ALWAYS some sort of sign that it's contaminated.

:whathesaid:trich is just the most common but things like penicillium and the weird one kizzle is talking about are often mistaken for trich

They look very similar that's why I had to limit it to a "might be". The most noticeable difference is Chaetomium forms a bunch of little tiny patches with a sort of bushy look to them. Trich sometimes starts with a bunch of tiny patches too but the ones near each other quickly grow together into one thick bubbly mat. However, if you can smell the notorious coconut odor then no doubt it's Trich.

Only reason I bother trying to distinguish the two is that Chaetomium species are very heat resistant and usually caused by insufficient pasteurization temperatures or time. So if you're able to determine what it is you have good idea what caused it.
