Some black wheat corn in grain jars?
    #20235808 - 07/07/14 03:51 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys,
the wheat corns in one of my grain jars turned black, but except this it looks more or less healthy, today I wanted to set up another monotub and I need this jar to spawn enough grain to the sub. Should I use this jar or not?

Those are not healthy. The black looks like a sporelating mold. If you spawn that you will most definitely be spawning the mold too!

That doesn't look normal, it looks almost rotten. I'm guessing bacterial contamination.

I disagree, I don't think it is sporulating mold, but I do think it is bacterial. The grains themselves have turned black, and appear to have no mycelium of any species growing on them. Mold has to have mycelium in order to sporulate, and I see nothing to indicate that on the black grains.

You're welcome. How long did you pressure cook your grain for? What kind of lid construction are you using(gas exchange and inoculation point)? What was your inoculation technique? Sterile precautions? Where did you get your inoculant from?

Ever see ergot on wheat?

That's the only thing I can think of.

I think I pc'd them for 60 or 90 minutes (currently I do 90 minutes on every new jar), the lid was bad just some tape with holes from the syringe (no contamn protection) currently I use self healing inoculation point lids with a fifth hole which I stuff with polyfill.

I think that was the problem, no protection from contamn, but since it was one of my early jars I have already learned and would never do something this reckless again

Can we get some pictures of your new lids and old lids? It'll help new growers see what do not do , and what to do. We might be able to help you with your current and improved construction as well.

It's good to see people rectify their own problems, well done.

Thanks  yes, I will upload pictures of them in about 12h or so

edit: as promised here are my current lids

the first one was my first lid, no contamn protection and only usable on brf cakes which have a dry verm barrier, but even there it isn't so recommend, rather use one of the others. The incoluation holes are sealed with RTV and one hole is for GE and stuffed with polyfill. The one with the 4 holes of rtv are the best of them for brf cakes, the one with the one inoculation hole is good for grain or lc jars, since it doesn't matter where to incoluate them and the one with the 3 holes is just useless for brf and could be used  as brf jar (probably drill another hole in it later and make 4 inoculation holes and one with polyfill or just use it for grain  )
