Cakes Left for Three Days Have Extreme Overlay
    #20237665 - 07/07/14 03:33 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I had to leave my cakes to fend for themselves since Thursday. This morning was my first morning back to them. I only had two, one birthed a day before the other. The first one had a nice flush of fruits, including a gargantuan one that was a good seven inches long. I used a sterile scalpel to harvest the ones with broken veils at the base. I put them on a tray in front of a fan to dry for two days before introducing them into my desiccant chamber. All that seems to be going well.

What I want to ask about is this: almost all my rolled verm had been colonized. I only saw the little hats that I left on top, basically. Does this mean that I overwatered the little buggers before I left, in my concern, or that they got dried out during my absence?

I left the lid kind of cracked while I was gone, so it's probably not from the buildup of CO2. Or do you have to actively fan them?

Let me know what you think, collective wisdom of the board! Thanks!

what do you mean "watered" ... You didnt mist them?
Im thinking they should have fruits if theyve been in there since thursday.

Overlay isn't even possible with cubes, much less cakes.

Sorry for using the wrong word. Yes, I misted above them and let it fall on them last Thursday. I did it a kind of a bit at the end of the day because I knew I wouldn't be able to water them at all for a few days.

They DID have fruit. They had a lot. One of them was seven inches long and fat. I harvested twelve mushies. There's a lot more pinning going on. I just wanted to know about the overlay. Is that bad? Does that always happen with a layer of rolled vermiculite, or is it a result of me not being there to mist and fan the cakes for a few days?

It's just two cakes, so it's not like a huge deal.

Okay, maybe I'm misunderstanding the term. Let me try to be descriptive, since I know you know your stuff you can probably tell me what actually happened.

There was a nice layer of fine vermiculite that I had rolled the cake in. I put a nice little thick 'hat' on top, as I heard this is a great water retainer for the cakes. I then misted over these cakes to let the water fall onto them from above.

What has happened is that, in the days I couldn't check on the cakes, the mycelium has grown through the vermiculite and basically covers it. You can see a little bit of verm through parts of the myc. But there's pinning and growing fruits extruding out all over the place. I guess I just want to check if the fact that a coating of mycelium has basically engulfed/ensconced the vermiculite is a dealbreaker, or if it's normal, or what.

These cakes are fruiting fine so it apparently isn't a problem. Thanks for everybody's help.
