Alchemy in Middle-Earth
    #2023760 - 10/19/03 10:35 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Just ordered it, and looking foward to reading it since I'm somewhat of a High Fantasy buff, and I recently read somewhere that J.R.R. Tolkien was Gnostic. Interesting enough, I remember a long while back someone attempted to link some Spiritual insights to LOTR and a few people jumped on him for it.

Popularly voted on Amazon.com as the most significant work of fiction of the 20th Century, The Lord of the Rings is replete with imagery and symbolism from traditional Islamic sources. All of this and more have been elaborated eloquently in Alchemy in Middle-Earth by Mahmoud Shelton, a contemporary scholar of Islamic history and traditions.

Covering topics such as Islamic Spiritual Chivalry, the Last Days, the Arrival of Armageddon, Purification of the Self, and much more, Alchemy in Middle-Earth is an enlightening and motivating read. Drawing upon traditional Islamic sources, this excellent book will but serve to awaken the mind to the deep and pervasive influence of Islamic Spirituality.

Never before has the esoteric significance of the "Novel of the Century" been explained. At last its profound symbolism is made clear in light of the Hermetic tradition, establishing The Lord of the Rings to be the work of an illuminated imagination. Alchemy in Middle-earth traces J.R.R. Tolkien's motifs to unexpected connections with Scotland, the Middle East, and legendary Atlantis, and unveils the ancient wisdom in Tolkien's great work not only with the Alchemy of the past, but also with the living spiritual alchemy of Sufism. In the process, the mysterious relationship between the spirituality of Islam and Tolkien's Christianity is revealed, signifying nothing less than the completion of the Grail quest at the end of an age.

Oh that was a mistake. JRR Tolkien hated people saying his work was symbolism for anything. It was a mjor enemy of his and this is exactly what this book is doing. It's very publication is an insult to him, stop the order if you can. :shake:

This lecture draws the same conclusion.

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings:  Gnosis for Our Day:

Its from here:

Great stuff. There are some other lectures on the basic assumptions of alchemy.

Could anyone remind me how you do a link in a reply?
