Uncolonized substrate has a strange quality
    #20236684 - 07/07/14 11:07 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone,

I've done quite a bit of searching on the Shroomery and elsewhere on the internet but I can't seem to find any information about my situation out there.

I am using the mad bag technique (grain) once again, growing Costa Rican Cubes. I inoculated my bags a little over a week ago, followed the instructions to a t as always.

I let them sit about a week and then I went to move them and noticed a couple bags' substrate seemed to look different than I remember. The substrate looked sort of yellowish brownish, vaguely mossy or maybe fuzzy. I let them sit a couple more days and I look again, they all look this way now.

I see a little tiny bit of myc growth where I inoculated on a couple bags, but not much else. Also, the bags do not smell.

Is this contamination? I'm hoping against hope it isn't, my last grow was contaminated and it would be a shame to lose four more bags. I've never had contamination problems before my last grow. Maybe this strange quality has to do with moisture, or is just the substrate airing out or something to do with the grain? Lol, just throwing things out there.

Thanks so much for your time, any help would be appreciated

Sounds very not good. Pictures would help us immensely with diagnosis.

It is pretty difficult to see through the bag

So that's not cubensis mycelium? If it isn't then of course it is contaminated.

JEsus

yeah that's all mold

back to the drawing board with your sterile tech, figure out what it was, and better luck next time

Thanks everyone, I am almost certain I had contaminated spores (I used the same syringe from my last attempt which also had this same contamination). Which is a shame, because I bought them from a extremely reputable source.

Again, thanks for your time and insight!!

What makes you think it was the syringe? Just because the same contaminant popped up twice? That's not that uncommon.

It may have been the syringe, but writing it off so soon could cause you to ignore lapses in your sterile technique which will leave you with wheels spinning.

Even if it was the syringe, keep trying to improve your technique. Good luck.

Both of those times I was using Mad Bags, which I bought pre-sterilized, sealed and what not. It is possible the substrate was not sterilized properly, but I thought it was unlikely it would have happened with several of them, from two separate orders.

And except for the spores themselves, I would imagine the only other way they could be contaminated would be from the syringe, but I used rubbing alcohol and flame, followed all directions and was as clean as I could be.

But who knows, it very well could have been my own mistake. I am trying jars this time around, so we'll see how this goes. But thank you! Best of luck to you as well

It's possible the mad bags were the cause, it's possible the syringe was, it's possible we were. I guess we'll never know.

What kind of jars will you be trying next? Grain or PF tek cakes?

Yup, very true. It was frustrating because I have never had any problem with contamination with that method in the past.

And I'm trying out the PF tek cakes. Much simpler than I imagined.

Cakes are pretty damn easy. So is bulk if you ever decide to venture there.

How to Grow Mushrooms!

Check this dvd out. Much easier than wading through the site trying to piece teks together. Plus, it supports Roger Rabbit, who is the man.

It certainly could've been your syringes then. I still hate seeing people blame them so quickly.

You're going to enjoy cakes. It's better to DIY, you appreciate the results much more. It's more more rewarding.
