zinc oxide plated flohood.
    #2022961 - 10/19/03 05:27 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, I am going to build a flowhood soon. I have a sheet of zinc oxide frum an old job. I want to do the inside of the chamber with it cause I get bored easily and I like to werk with metal and wood. Does anyone see any benifits/hazards to this at all. I was told the zinc oxide should be an additional bacteria killer. Any coment?

Thanks

Jater

I would think it might rust easily -- other than that I don't know.

This zinc doesn't rust, it weathers. They use it on the outside of buildings.

Peace

Glvanized steel uses a carbon-reduced zinc oxide coating. I think this is probably what you're talking about. That should work fine.

Zinc oxide itself would probably be very reactive (a strong oxidizing agent) but it's reduced in this case and this makes a carbonate "shielding" of the film which protects steel from oxidizing.

Edit: that was my bad -- I missed the word "plated" -- sorry. That should work fine. Won't have antimicrobial properties, though. You have to galvenize the steel, though -- maybe if you have a vat of molten zinc. You'd clean the steel really well and dip it in the zinc and then apply the Zn2(OH)2CO3 coating.

Thgese sheet is complete zinc, no other steel in it. The use it industrail appications. We used it to make us a fat mixing desk fer our studio, and one wall in our lounge area. No galvanized at in in it. the sheet itself is very soft, almost like lead. Like I said, I get bored and have the need to create.
thanks micro
