Pour boiling water over WBS. How long?
    #20229532 - 07/05/14 08:01 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I forgot how long one is supposed to do this after the pre soak and rinse stage.

This stage hydrates the seeds. I forgot how long to "steep" wbs.

I believe it was an hour our so?

Please and thanks for all help

All you do is pour boiling water over wbs. The wbs is in a bucket. And then you cover it with tin foil. And leave it there for a certain amount of time and it works perfectly. It's easier than that tek. I just can't remember how long I leave them in the bucket. Pretty sure it's an a little over an hour

I let it sit for about 4-6 hours. Then I dump into strainer over bathtub and let drip. If your doing big amounts of grain you will have to towel dry to get to proper outside dryness.

If you look closely you can see the shadow line on the bucket where the grain starts...

thanks how much have you done this? seems quick and easy. after you strain do you just spread it out on a table witha towel under them and stir occasionally? And do you think adding freshly brewed coffee and gypsum would hurt? The coffee comes out extremely hot from my percolator

I leave it in the strainer, then get old bath towels and run them through the wet grain and soak all the loose moisture. Apply metal spoon test when you think it might be dry enough. This is a good measuring test...

Once satisfactorily dry, spoon into jars and then apply lid followed by foil cap and rubberband and proceed into pressure cooker sterilization. 40min at 15 psi.

I do 17 to 18 wide mouth pint size jars at a time. 40-45 has always worked for me. But don't take my word for it and don't take any word as the gospel. You would be better off to learn by experience...

One should never pour boiling water over any dry grain.  It will burst the kernels leading to poorer performance than normal.  Soak the grains in warm water to hydrate them slowly.

So maybe I wont give it a try then :takingnotes:
I always soak my WBS in cold water, but thats only because the basement stays at an even 60 so I dont really have a choice to do it different

The point is to soften the outer hull so the grain can absorb water. Any way you go about this without bursting a lot of grains is fine.
