How to cut outgrow SFD's for plastic lids, they are thick.

Hello fellas, those SFD from outgrow are really thick and i'm sure i will not be able to cut them with scissors, i would have to use a hole saw i think, just to be clear... what size GE hole should i choose for those lids, 1/2 " right?
And when cutting the SFD, i have to cut a disk of 1" or bigger for the RTV silicon, or 1" is good enough?

i think i got mine from outgrow too (i got from a few different vendors, I'm pretty sure outgrow was one of them). i was able to cut mine with scissors tho. i use 3/8" hole. i traced a quarter and cut that size.if they are so thick u cannot cut with scissors, 1/2" probably fine. Aloha lids are 3/4", but they use them in conjunction with these really thick cellulose filters, about twice as thick as any SFD i have ever got. remember to use sandpaper around the hole so the RTV sticks better if using plastic lids

Hey Bl, in the Drill bit it says 1/2" and when i measure is not. When you made your holes you measured the drill bit?

well i burned my holes with a wood carving tool to prevent cracking. if the metal tool u use (like a nail) is smaller than the hole size you want, just kinda go in a spiral motion when it is red hot to increase the size of the hole.

Use it whole, under the lid. They're designed to be used like that. They originally come from Aloha.

Idk 36... The SFD's doesn't fit very good under the lid b/c there are also this screw rings under the lid and is not flat, if i use it above the lid it is flat enough for the RTV to stick well.

I cut mine with scissors no problem. They're a little thick, but they cut pretty easy. A hole saw would just tear them up IMO. I made over 10 filtered lids from like 2-3 SFD discs cutting them into quarter sizes and using clear RTV silicone to apply them to the lids(scratch the surface a to give the RTV more bite). I did 10 quarts of grain spawn so far(still a newb haha) and no contams.

Just make sure the holes are close to or in the center of the lid(unless there's multiple all over). I made some for my PF jars that were off to the side and it caused a very small part of the sub to not colonize immediately under it.

I really like those thick, cellulose filters compared to the thinner ones. I'd recommend getting some plastic lids and drilling 4 holes in them just like a PF Tek lid (I use old cake lids, actually) and install the whole filter inside the plastic lid, it'll stay in place without any silicone at all, at least for the regular mouth plastic lids. Really easy to open and close with one hand, too. You could drill 3-4 holes near the center of the lid as well. Don't forget foil when PC'ing them, too, they get wet easier than the synthetic discs.

Thanks, i tried them closing the lid and they indeed stay in place like you and 36 mention above. However, I would like to glue them with RTV because they fall when you take the lid off.
The 1/2" or the 3/8 " hole in the middle will work also, right? Or why you think is better with the pf tek holes pattern?

Just get your technique down so you grab the filter with the lid.

But what is the inconvenience of gluing the SFD?

When your lids wear out you won't have to rip the RTV off the filter. I also doubt they would fit if you made them any thicker whatsoever.

Also, your holes should be fine. I use some pretty tiny holes, but each lid has 3-4 of them. My goal is to make holes smaller than my millet so it doesn't get stuck.

Idk? I use my smallest drill bit to make 3-4 holes, or I just jam a screwdriver through it. It's not something to overthink.

For some reason my lids always get bent or too rusted before the filter starts to fail using ez felt. Maybe I just got gorilla hands but I bend a LOT of stuck lids, main reason I switched to bags and only use jars for spawn and can't wait for my hood replacement to get here so i can do agar and say fuck jars all together. Nothing gets old like making 150 lids and then making up 150 jars of spawn...Also does anyone have a good way to prevent stuck lids? I clean the lip off but they are still glued on.
