Liners and packing down substrate

When you guys/girls your tubs do you find packing the sub tighter discourages side pinning?
And does the liner being opaque really make much of a difference? I seem to get the same results with black and translucent white.
Thanks

I would not pack down substrate, it makes it harder for the myc to colonize it. It would probably make it harder to keep the thing hydrated also. That is just my opinion.

Liner color doesn't matter a whole lot. Don't pack your substrate, unless it's all straw.

It doesn't matter at all.

That is because the color does not matter at all, light is not the cause of side pinning, FAE hitting the sides of the substrate is.
If the liner is able to stick to the sides of the substrate as it consolidates, or shrinks, then air cannot hit the sides, meaning no side pins will form.
Black, blue, yellow, or clear....it makes no difference.
Do not pack down the substrate.....

The only thing that prevents side pins is to prevent air from hitting the sides. If you are seeing side pins even with a liner that shrinks with the sub then you need to tighten holes and increase the surface humidity.

^^^ What he said. Straw is the only sub that needs to be compacted due to it's form and the amount of air pockets that remain when it is loosely laid...

Thanks! I never pack the sub down so I figured I'd ask before experimenting.
Reason i asked about the liner is my trashbags are so thin and messy, but i have nice thick clear dropcloth that would work out nicer.

I try to keep the sub as fluffy as possible. Some species like hericium prefer a compact substrate but cubes, pans, and stone producers do not.
