First Mono-Tub, Colonizing Extremely Fast!
    #20223343 - 07/04/14 10:08 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys,

I spawned some Brazilians to my very first mono-tub following The Elementary Coir Tek.  I am extremely impressed so far at how fast it is colonizing.  I have a clear tub, so I can see all the progress.  I am planning on cutting the holes in it just before fruiting.

Here are some pictures I just took.  I spawned the rye on July 1st, so this is only 3-4 days progress!  Is this normal or extra speedy?

End view:

depends, what was your spawn ratio? 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4 are the most common...

so, did you spawn something like 5 quarts of grain to 8qts of coir or something like that?

ha! I got confused when I looked at your pics and I didn't immediately recognize the carpet as carpet and it translated in my brain as substrate and I was like: "ooohhh mmmyyy gggaaawwwdd CCCOOONNNTTTAAAMMM!!!"

Awesome, I'm pretty stoked.  So basically just introduce fruiting conditions as soon as the surface is all white with mycelium?  Or do they also need a week consolidation period like cakes?

Line your tub with a trash bag next time. That thing is probably going to side pin like crazy!

I haven't used liners in years. I get some side fruits but it's not a big deal.

Thanks guys.

I decided to not use the liner since the tek didn't call for it and it's my first time; keeping it extra simple.  If I run into problems, I guess I will know to use one next time.

Nah that's about right.  5 quarts to a brick is slightly lower than what I use, I generally go 7/1, but I use bags to and measure out pretty much full quarts and see full coverage in 4-5 days and open to fruit in generally 6-7.  Good luck on it stayin clean, i know my first couple runs of monotubs were failures.  Hopefully your previous cake success will help, as I jumped right in the deep end.

I hear conflicting info about this, is there any benefit to letting it sit for a while?

I think Ill fruit this tub tommorow then!

It was said for a while back that longer bulk consolidation times led to more potent fruits.
IME it appears to be true, but the difference In potency is negligible. I have seen that I get better pinsets, more yield, and the same cubensis potency fruits when I just supply FAE from 100%+3 days (to allow time for any uncolonized inner pockets to fill in).

Congrats on the speedy colonization, your time is about right IMO.  How come you haven't pre cut your holes and covered them with duct tape while it colonizes?  It's gonna make a mess all over your substrate once you cut them

I didn't figure it made sense to cut the holes just to cover them back up.  I can easily lay a few paper towels or something over the surface when I cut them to catch the shavings.

Well you're gonna use the tub again I'm sure so you might as well get use to it .  I don't recommend using trash bags as liners as you've been recommended to use.  I use painters plastic which is much thicker and more durable.  If you use trash bags you won't be able to pull out your substrate during harvest time.  You're going to have a hell of a time harvesting without a liner.  Pulling out your substrate during harvest saves a lot of energy, reaching into your tub to harvest is a tiring process.  Also during colonization if you have a liner, the beads of moisture will fall behind the lined substrate instead of creating pooling on your substrate, you can avoid bacteria this way.

I've never heard of completely removing your substrate to harvest - is this normal now?

Lol. The female wouldn't let me use up the good t rashbags so I made a few liners out of smaller bags cut up. Side fruits everywhere bottom fruits fruits growing tangled up in the bag.. what a mess.

Its fucking thick dropcloth from now on... the good stuff

I'll tell you the way I cut my first monotub holes for when it comes time to do your own. I used a glass on the inside of my tub, pressured up against the side to catch the plastic shavings.

Get the big box of contractor grade trash bags at the home depot man.  I can get 3 tubs per bag.  I think its like 4mil or something like that, I'll have to look at the box next time i am out there.  I seem to have better luck using liners as far as sidepins and multiple flushes go.  Also leaving the liner on.  Every tub i removed the linner from and flipped ofer after the second flush trichd this round of 8 tubs.  The two I just harvest and mist, going on flush 4 now. I did get mondo 65 g fruits out of it in 3rd flush.

That's an even more simple idea!  Perfect, thanks for the tip.

Sounds like I will be making my next tub with a heavy duty liner too.  I've seen the pictures on here of people with their grows removed from the tub via the liner, just never really put two and two together to realize how much easier it is for harvest.

I think you consolidate the cakes so the m yc has a chance to eat up alot of its food INside the jars so they don't dry out while waiting to fruit in the FC.

I think that'd the idea behind it at least

Since cakes are not mixed like bags there is a chance its not 100% on the inside, to my knowledge that is why.

For years, anytime someone would say to give an extra week to allow the center to colonize, I'd jump in and try to set the record straight, but I got tired of typing the same thing dozens of times for nothing, so now I only type it once a month or so.

When the outsides of a jar are fully colonized, the center will be also. There is far more substrate on the outside edge of the jar(because it has more area) than on the inside, so there's no way the inside would not be colonized as well.

The reason for waiting a week after full colonization is to allow the mycelium to consolidate its hold on the substrate. Until the mycelium digests some of the substrate it has colonized, it will not fruit. If you birth the day of full colonization, the week spent consolidating the hold, will be a week spent drying out the cake, thus making pinning harder and yields weak. If you wait a week after full colonization, pins often form within 48 hours of birthing/dunk and roll.

Well I will be damned, that is why I don't do cakes lol, I don't know enough.

so surely the same principle carries over to bulk subs?

I guess you wouldn't have to worry about them drying out nearly as much though. especially in a monotub.

I have to say if people are getting tired out picking mushrooms from inside a tub they might want to consider actually getting some exercise every now and then (of course if your tub is the size of a swimming pool i understand)

Its not the effort, its the tedium.  A first flush tub with a full canopy and any amounts of aborts is a decent job to do.  Do 8-10 tubs and there goes a couple days.  Get a tub with side pins and a bunch of aborts, throw that bitch away.
