Cleaning Shrooms
    #2021879 - 10/19/03 03:28 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone know of a good way to clean wild mushrooms off?

I have just been washing them off thoroughly with water, then eating. Is this sufficient?

i usually dont wash them off unless they are very dirty with that kind of dirt that doesnt come off without water and is deep in the chasms between the gills.

i dont like to wash them because it tends to malign the flavor in my opinion, but rinsing them wont do much. just dont soak them in water. i just use a knife or paper towel or blow on them to get the dirt off. they dont have to be perfectly clean, so you know.

First, use your knife to trim any parts that are encrusted with dirt or wood or that are tough. Then, use a moderately stiff brush to brush off any remaining particles. They sell brushes specifically for this sort of thing at the grocery store.

For most mushrooms you should avoid putting them in water or running water over them. Most kinds will soak up the water like a sponge, and that will make cooking them much more difficult.

There are some kinds that you can put in water. If you put one in water and then you can wring the water out of it like a sponge, then you want to avoid water as much as possible.

Happy mushrooming!

I know the mushrooms I found are cubies... I KNOW this, there's no way they wouldn't be. I can wring water out of them like a sponge, so would this be the reason why when I have like 3 or 4 cups of mushroom tea (After rinsing them off, and even squeezing the water out of them) I have no real change, maybe a slightly better mood but nothing significant?

Psilocybin and psilocin are both soluble in water. To help protect them against potential chemical attack, you should add a little bit of something acidic to the water. Lemon juice is probably a good choice.

Happy mushrooming!
