4 jars colonizing, but they all look slightly different [PICS]
    #20218669 - 07/03/14 09:15 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

This was my first attempt and I guess I need to work on my sterile tek.  I inoculated 8 jars: 4 contam'ed and 4 appear to be colonizing, but the 4 that are colonizing all look a little different. Are these all normal?

This is Jar 1, it was the first jar to start colonizing and appears to be growing just fine and is the "baseline" that I'm comparing my other jars to:

This is Jar 2, I think this jar may be a little too wet? Instead of seeing fuzzy, hairy myc like I do in jar 1, in this jar it just appears that the substrate is changing color to white, but I'm not seeing a textural change. My guess is that it's too wet and possibly the myc are being matted down:

This is jar 3, the last jar to start colonizing. It's more gray than white, but my guess is that it's because the myc aren't thick enough yet so it's sort of semi-transparent and the white is mixing with the brown substrate and appearing as a grey color to my eyes. Or is that just grey mold?

And jar 4: This jar also looks too wet, and I don't really see any fuzzy, hairy myc. It looks more like a thick white glob of mucus, but maybe that's just because it's too wet in the jars:

Backside of jar 4, similar growth:

What do you guys think? Do they look normal/salvagable, or should I start over?

may be a little wet. just keep em going and if they fully colonize then you're good to go.

Take the foil off already.

I'm using foil in lieu of lids, there are no lids underneath the foil and the foil has holes poked in the top. I guess next time I'll use the lids, I didn't want to poke holes in the lids in case I wanted to reuse the jars for canning food, but I guess that's the sacrifice you make.

I wouldn't trust foil by itself. that's an accident waiting to happen!

Thanks guys, I'm gonna quarentine the funky looking ones and see how they turn out, then inoculate 8 more with less water in the substrate and more sterile technique and see if it turns out differently.

Please use a real lid next time around, you get much better chances even with stellar technique

it should be obvious but

it's the PF tek man don't try to reinvent the wheel
