Midwest Grow Kits
#20214981 - 07/02/14 12:35 PM (10 years, 6 months ago) |

I ordered the simple kit for my first grow before realizing that kits are kind of frowned upon around here.
I understand why and now I wish I had made my own "kit" for the experience. I will definitely do that next time.
But, what's done is done.
I'm not looking to be lectured or told not to use the kit, I simply want to know if anyone here has used one and had success. So please, do tell if you have.

Lots of people have used them with some measure of success. Most of those are people who built a SGFC and fruited their kit in it. So built yourself one and put your tray/cakes in it. You will be glad you did

I used their kit about three years ago. I think 9 out of 12 contaminated. They might have lost their moisture. Took forever to colonizers and three or four weeks to pin. Luckily three were a success and I got plenty of prints.
I used those prints with PF and had 100% success.

Thanks for the quick and straightforward answer!
The kit I got comes with a "growing and incubating chamber" which looks to be a simple plastic storage container, so I'm guessing that will become my SGFC.

Damn, 9 out of 12 contaminated... that's rough.
Hopefully they've improved the quality over three years. XD

It's hard to say what the fault was. That's one of the rubs about grow kits.

The fruiting chamber they sent me was only seven inches tall. Go buy a bigger plastic storage box Those little guys are gonna need more room. And three or four inches of wet perlite. Have fun

I wouldn't bother with the incubator either. Just put the jars out on a shelf.

I'll be getting 6 1/2 pint jars.
What size container would you guys recommend to get for a SGFC?
I just got my syringe containing burma spores and now I'm getting really excited...

Should I be looking for specific dimensions? I mean obv I'm not gonna get something super long and flat, but I don't want to get anything bigger than I have to, either.

What about this instead of making a SAB?
I assume there's a catch, since it seems too simple.

Just seems like extra work if the method I posted works like the guy claims it does.
At the moment, the less equipment I have around the better.

There lies the difference between the pros and the amateurs. You'll learn that the quality of your projects resides on the quality of your equipment and the quality of the effort you are willing to provide.
If you only want to lackadaisically toss little effort at it, then you will reap what you sow...

Thank you!
Now, can any of you fine specimens point me in the direction of a good method to follow while inoculating using a SAB?
I think I've got the general idea down after reading around here, such as disinfect and wet the inside, leave for a while to let particles settle, use rubber gloves and sterilize the needle, etc... I just wanna make sure I'm not missing anything.
If there is one godly, above-all tek to follow I'd love to know!

Most TEKs will give you the same result. There is no know-all be-all TEK. Just different methods to get you a mushy end result...

Do explain. I haven't heard of this method before.
I got all my stuff to make a SAB so I'll be doing that tomorrow morning.

I rub my hands and the jars with peroxide. I place three jars in the freezer bag. Wipe the syringe with peroxide and flame the tip. Inoculate one jar, remove it, flame the tip and so on.
