WTF!?! This Mono is driving me NUTS!
    #20214371 - 07/02/14 09:08 AM (10 years, 6 months ago)

This variety of mushroom has been slow in every aspect of it's cultivation.  From my rye quart jars to the tub, but it's finally hit the ridiculous.

The jars were very slow compared to the other MS syringe that I did. They took almost 2 weeks longer to colonize their rye quarts vs the other variety that were inoculated on the same day. Plus, the mycelium was very very fluffy vs. the rhizo growth the other MS syringe.

On 5.2.14 I spawned 4 quarts of rye to 66qt tub of properly pasteurized sub of coir and vermiculate.

I used:
One brick of coir
2 quarts of verm (your preference)
4 quarts of water
Handful of gypsum

The sub is 3 inches.  It's been slowly colonizing and colonizing a fluffy mycelium.

Over the last week. It's stopped colonizing.  It's looked like this for the last 7 days.  What could be going on?????

This is what it looked like 2 WEEKS AGO!

I sure hope all that color change isn't mold

it looks a bit bacterial to me, but I still think it looks pretty healthy considering it's been colonizing for 2 months.
when it takes that long its usually because a contam has taken hold of your sub.

After 2 months, and considering you used coir+verm+gypsum I'd just fruit it.
It probably wont finish as its been 2 months already.
It might well go green/nasty when you fruit it but then at least you'll know.

it wont be as good as a fully colonized sub but its the only way to get anything out of this IME.

If it is bacteria, wouldn't it have started pinning? So far, no green and no pins.

My guess is something hitchhiked from the spawn jars

but hardly any margin change of myc and an onset of gray on that coco looks a bit fishy

can you describe the texture, specifically of those uncolonized spots? does it have filaments?

many contams will just sit and wait for fae in the tub, it could have hiked along from your initial agar plate as well.
So there's a good chance it will go south once you introduce it to fruiting,
but hey, only one way to find out right.
healthy spawn dont need 2 months to colonize a cvg sub..

This variety has never shown any  signs of rhizomorphic growth. It's always been a cotton ball look. This includes when colonizing the jars. So the uncolonized areas have a faint cottony look.

Welp, that isn't the news I wanted to hear. I had a jar that I didn't trust and made a mini dub tub. That did go south with trich. I had hoped if this had it, it would have reared its ugly green head by now.

I'm on vacation for a week, so I think I'm going to let it sit for that week rather than starting fae while I'm gone. Prefer not to come home  to a green sub.  And expose the house to mold.

Thoughts

From what I can see from the pics, it looks a little too wet in there to me. That strain also looks very fluffy. 2 months is a really long time for colonization. What is your temperature like?

I'd sacrifice the stalled tub to an outdoor manure patch  doesnt look too hopeful

can't believe it was spawned in may

I would just fruit it before vacation, but I like surprises. You really don't have anything to lose at this point.

I hear ya. I been doing 5-6 shoebox size mini's cause I am paranoid of having a big tub contam. I need to get over that and just make more spawn....lol. But yes, 2 mo seems a long time. But I have only done small monos. The small ones take around 7-10 days on average. Usually not more than 2 weeks. But I also use alot of spawn  1:2 spawn/sub (usually). I could get away with much less doing straw and hpoo but I like the fast colonization time. Especially now it's getting hot out. Already had some minor heat related issues.

Try raising the temps a little. I have mine at a constant 75.

PS when you're offered a couple free syringes if you buy some (like a buy 4 get 2 free) and the free ones are something you've never heard of......probably shouldn't use those.
