It's risky, but riskier things have been pulled off. If you have to do it make sure you use a SAB and a sterilized utensil to get at clean spawn away from the verm layer.

you dont wanna do that. Just try to think about the logistics, dry verm barrier filter is out of the question and you probably wont be able to pull it off. no offense!

Reasons like this are why I still use grain jar lids with a filter when I do happen to do a few BRF jars.

G2G from a normal PF cake is a recipe for fail. Some of the dry verm filter always falls down when you open the jar, carrying contam spores with it.
Not only that, but you have to use a tool to bust it up. That's another possible vector for contams. It's not like flaming the tip of a scalpel or syringe. You'd have to flame damn near the whole knife to ensure sterility.
If you wanna expand it, you can spawn it to bulk once it's colonized.
If you're gonna do PF cakes, using a real filter is totally the way to go. But since the PF TEK is basically the cheap & easy way out, using a dry verm barrier works for most cases.
BTW, I hope you have some BRF in those jars with your verm. Otherwise nothing's gonna grow.

I'm surprised more people aren't using real filters instead of the verm layer.

Cause most people doing the PF TEK are going for minimal supplies, and a dry verm barrier works perfectly fine if you plan to fruit them as cakes or spawn them.

True I guess I just don't personally think filtered lids are that much more supplies nor money and they have alot more advantages. I guess I'd just like to see more people start using them rather than the standard verm layer
