How do you throw away a contaminated bulk cake?
    #20191763 - 06/26/14 10:40 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

I used the search and couldn't find anything on this subject.

I'm considering doing a monotub bulk grow for my first bulk grow :-)

One of my biggest concerns is if it's contaminated (which it prolly will be at some point), how do I dispose of the bulk cake in a safe way? I imagine breathing in green mold spores and such could harm my health. I've done cakes, but they're so much smaller I just put them in a jar, close it, and throw it with the trash. My other concern is will this stink up my ally way if it's in one of those trash bins out back? Or would it be better to drive it to the dump to get rid of it?

Thank you :-)

Lyghtsout

I would bury it if you could. I wouldn't want things like that in my trash, just in case.

I don't have that option :frown: no yard.

I'm torn between scleroita and bulk growing mushrooms. Scleroita seems more convenient, stealthy, and from what I understand the effects are identical if they're allowed to sit for 6 months. If I got a contam I'd just throw the jar in with the trash. But they don't look like mushrooms :frown: and in a way the convenience takes the fun out of growing I imagine.

If I figure a safe and stealthy way to dispose of a contaminated bulk cake I'll prolly go monotub for those reasons. But right now I have no idea how to do this.

Get or make a compost and put it on your balcony, or just toss it in the dumpster. It sounds like you must live in an apartment or something, in that case as long a no one catches you in the act you should be fine since its a community dumpster. Mold spores shouldn't get that bad either just as long as you catch it early. Bag it up and toss, shouldn't be that hard.

I don't live in a apartment but I don't have a yard that I can bury a cake in without looking really weird to a lot of people lol. I don't have a balcony either :frown:.

It sucks, I really wanna do a bulk grow but at this point it seems safer to just do a lot of cakes.

A lot of people stick with cakes, they have better biological efficiency!

Open it under water (no spore burst), drain the water and just empty it in the trash... Don't waste your jars.

If you follow your teks you will get less than %5 contams...

Then when the substrate is spent just chuck it in a shopping bag and bin it. The only thing you have to do is DON"T TELL ANYONE!!! That way no one would ever think to look in your trash and try and guess what this potting mix stuff might be...
