silver creek, Idaho ID request
    #20185160 - 06/25/14 04:04 PM (9 years, 7 months ago)

Let first start off by saying I am new to this whole mushroom hunting thing. I apologize in advance if my descriptions are poor. I am not very familiar with the words used to describe mushrooms. The below species was found in silver creek, ID. I am pretty sure it contains pcylocybin because there was some bluing on the stem. I say pretty sure because I am not very experienced and im iinda colorblind haha. Im mainly looking for a species ID/ exact mushroom name. And maybe also a thread on this site that explains the different words that are used to describe mushrooms (like convex, conic, stipe, etc...)?

Species: maybe conocybe or psilocybe pelliculosa?

Habitat: growing off of a fallen conifer in the woods at silver creek in ID just off of a single track trail. Some growning directly on the tree and some where the tree is touching the ground

Gills: im not sure what words mean what to describe gills I have included a pic of them. Maybe a dark tannish color? Im colorblind so please bear with me.

Stem: hollow, greyish brown? With extreme bluing within seconds of liting off the fallen conifer.

Cap: yellowish tan? With a darker maybe purpley? Ring around the cap and the same color in center with age. Im guessing thats what happens since not all of them had it on them it was mostly the bigger ones that had it. No blueing when damaged that I noticed. Striate/translucent when moist? Not sure if thats the right word.

Blueing: definitely at base of the stem when lifted from habitat. Not able to tell if the cap has blued.

General area: Silver Creek area.

Again sorry if this post is very poor and sorry for the horrible descriptions. This is my first post. And obviously my first time describing a shroom haha. Sorry if the pictures arent very good I didnt ex9ect to run into any so I didnt bring gear. I also dont have a spore print I had no paper while camping and when I tried to when I got home the shrooms were too dry I think. Cause there was no sporeprint. If anyone could help itd be great. And if anyone could tell me how theyd describe the colors that would be very helpful. Cause I am colorblind and cant see those inbetween colors.

thanks!

Theyre similar to the pics I found on google but the ones I saw at silver creek didnt have the veil (I think thats what its called) on the stem and they werent quite as big and none of them had a "bumb" on the cap. And the wood wasnt rotted enough to have moss growing on it too.  And they were very fragile.

I thought they might be at first.  There were two things that made me think otherwise, and I'd love your thoughts on my reasoning.

I think I see dark spores on some of the caps.  And the wood seemed to be fairly sturdy, not rotted, where I normally encounter Galerina.

To be honest, it scares me a little that I sometimes feel like I can't positively identify a Galerina.

The gills are totally the wrong colour for Psilocybe. Also the foot on Psilocybe is fibrous and not at all fragile or brittle. I think Galerina as well, from the cap shape and orange gills, but not 100% certain, no ring, odd season, and foot colour looks off.

Correction, I can see a ring or fragments of ring in some of the photos, so I reckon almost 100% Galerina.

Shit if its posionous and blues does that mean it contains psilocybe and a toxic ingredient? Or do mushrooms that arent active stain blue too?

There's no bluing on these. I can see some rusty spore dust on the last picture, indicating Galerina( Psilocybe would purple-brown). There are some mushrooms that bruise yet have no active compounds, some of which are toxic.

Yes, there are mushrooms that are not active and stain blue.

Wait if theres no bluing then what color is the base of the stem on the middle top picture? Sorry im colorblind and it might be blue to me but green to someone else. Ive not been able to see pink on a dull white before. And if thats not blue then I know that if I see that then I might be wrong ya know?

I'd call that white-ish. You're looking for dark blue bruising as in these pictures.

However I have no idea what actives grow in Idaho or even if they actually bruise blue.

Just be careful man, there aren't many actives in Idaho, and nearly all look very similar to Galerina. It could be, not only fatal, but a very painful mistake.
