Poppies, Opium, where now???

So basically a question regarding poppies and their opium production.
I've heard before that poppies do not produce opium in certain places in the world. Specifically in the northern latitudes. Is this true???
I mean i can grow poppies... who can't???? But would it be worthwhile for me to grow for a purpose other than beauty?

No. Not worthwhile, unless you eat seeds in rolls and stuff like that.

Ok
nah, seeds just get in my teeth. Although do the seeds have a mycological purpose? like milo?
and what is the cut off zone for that stuff?? i find it interesting it cuts off at a zone, latitude wise.
Anyone know the reasoning of that??

I think you are thinking of weed. It's trichomes where thc is made, act as a uv sheild to the plant so the more intense the sun the more thc. If you grow a high potency Mexican sativa seed in a northern latitude it will turn out low potency hemp. This is why we always had hemp, but marijuana was a Mexican drug. They grow poppies in england, and in Australia. Thats a big range, you are probably in between.

Hmmm..... Nope.
Definitely poppy. Papaver somniferum specifically.
Doesn't produce opium at higher latitudes... I'll find the quote

Yeah, it has been said about poppies but it is BS. In fact I think the DEA said exactly that regarding why the Opium Poppy Control act could be repealed (which it was a long time ago).
Poppies might be associated with places like Afghanistan and central America but they are typically cultivated at higher altitudes where climate is more mild. which they like. Of course they will do better if they can overwinter and get plenty of sun, but they will hardly disappoint even in much of Canada and northern Europe. They will produce opium, and it can be quite potent. Just look at the UK, they have plenty of medical poppy farms.

Opium means juice. All poppies have opium and all poppies can be fatal if ingested.

Ok... So can someone give me an actual answer.... Papaver somniferum makes alkaloids. Do other poppy plants make alkaloids also? And if so, everywhere it grows?

Well if i'm wrong, please correct me.
No comment won't help anyone learn.
I'm pretty sure not all of the poppies have the alkaloids to produce opium.
So while "not all poppies contain opium" might have been incorrect/retarded of me to say. I do know, almost positively that you CANNOT produce opium from just any poppy.

P. setigerum, P. dubium , P. glaucum, and maybe some others produce morphine and latex but the potency leaves much to be desired. I've at least heard of people having success using a bunch of setigerum in a tea. No real reason to grow them for the purpose of opiates.
Also if you are confused about 'giant poppies' they are a variety of P. somniferum, sometimes considered their own subspecies giganteum.

Sweet.
I got giant poppies from my teacher. Think I'll just go buy a $1 pack of somniferum seeds. That way I definitely know what I'm growing
